Is this some kind of joke? Are they just toying with us? Are the Democrats really conceding defeat in the offshore drilling issue? According to this story they are (sort of).
Democrats have decided to allow a quarter-century ban on drilling for oil off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to expire next week, conceding defeat in a months-long battle with the White House and Republicans set off by $4 a gallon gasoline prices this summer.
If this is true, and not some sort of trick, it’s a small step in the right direction. The Democrats are afraid of sending a bill to the President that he’ll veto. He said he would veto a bill that continues the moratorium.
They are sneaking a lot of pork into the bill, which, considering current events is reprehensible. But, they will argue, they’re helping people with things like heat and keeping their automobile manufacturing plants open.
The Democrats also promise to re-visit the issue next year with the new president. We can only pray it’s not a President Obama.
It’s nice to hear some good news today. It took until 1 o’clock in the morning to hear some, but still.
