Siena’s September 8 New York Poll has Obama only leading McCain in New York by 5 percentage points. He had an 18 point lead in June. The margin of error is +/-3.9, so it’s practically a tie here in the bluest of blue states.
McCain’s also leading in national polls and has pulled ahead in the electoral count predictions. It remains to be seen what effect today’s financial news will have on the polls, but for now things are looking up for McCain/Palin.

Newsweek is arguing that the finacial news presents a huge opportunity for Obama, in shifting the emphasis to a topic that can actually win the election for him. I’m not so sure …
McCain might consider making a case that under his rule the economy will be in better hands. To this end, he has a head start, by explaining that the economic downturn has been largely fueled by the rising cost of energy and that his past comments and proposals like drilling can go some way in addressing this.
Either way McCain must start talking economy ahead of any pronunciations from the Obama camp on the same subject. Let us hope he takes the lead today, he has his cue from Wall St.
