Now I’ve seen it all. Scott Lehigh at the Boston Globe posits that Barack Obama is the new, old Gipper. I thought it was a joke until I read the article. Now I’m sure it was a joke.
Of course, Lehigh doesn’t believe Obama and Reagan have anything in common as far as ideology goes. “Heaven forfend.” At least we can agree on that. But the parallels he draws leave me somewhat perplexed.
Reagan, they were told, was a scary figure. A warmonger, even.
Then the two debated. Seeing the avuncular Reagan on the stage, Americans concluded he wasn’t the radical ideologue of caricature, and that he’d make an acceptable alternative.
Lingering doubts resolved, he won in a landslide.
In what way was Ronald Reagan a radical? As far as I know, he didn’t pal around with known American terrorists. He didn’t seek out Marxist professors. The only thing Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama have in common is that Reagan at one time was a Democrat, but then his party left him.
Lehigh isn’t arguing that Barack Obama will be a successful president, only that he will be successful in winning the election. Maybe he’s right. If so, perhaps we will see a true Reaganite emerge in 2012 to clean up the mess.

I hope America is still able to be saved after 4 years of the Messiah.
And Obama is a lot more like Jimmy Carter than any other candidate in my memory.

Barack Obama IS the next Ronald Reagan! He is a smart, graceful, and ellogant speaker who wants to restore America to her former glory just like Reagan did back in the 80s.
Mccain is really a liberal who will keep the government bloated and raise everyones taxes to pay for big bailout rescue plans. Palin is worse than Dan Qayle and Walter Mondale combined.
