I received the following e-mail today. It came from a friend of a friend who is friends with the author of the email. I checked the story and found this report from the writer’s local news outlet, so I know it’s not just another ‘urband legend’ e-mail circulating around cyberspace.
The woman was called by an Obama volunteer and she expressed her opinion of Barack Obama. Either the volunteer is an idiot or she’s evil and vindictive. You decide. Either way, if you think you’ve lost some civil rights under George W. Bush (such as calling terrorists overseas), imagine life under President Obama and his thugocracy.
Subject: Kinda like Germany in the 1930′s.On Wednesday the 1st of October I received a call on my cell while in the car with my husband. It was a woman who identified herself as calling from the Obama Campaign. The phone # she called from was 903-798-6020 which lists as ‘Obama Volunteers of Texarkana’ (Texas).
She asked if I was an Obama supporter to which I replied: ‘No, I don’t support him, your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the State Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets; I think you should find something better to do with your time.’ I hung up.
Thursday, October 2, I answered the front door to find the Secret Service. Immediately I thought of the call and was furious that apparently you are not allowed to call Obama a Socialist without the Secret Service coming to investigate.
Instead, they asked me about the following comment, relayed by the Obama Volunteer of Texarkana who called me, unsolicited on my cell phone: ‘I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor.’
My husband laughed and told them “No, she called him a socialist but she never said a word about him dying.” I gave them my actual quote. The woman asked insolently “Oh? Well why would she make that up?”I replied that I supposed she wasn’t happy about what I said about her candidate and the Agent said “That’s right, you were rude!” The last time I checked being rude wasn’t a crime in America.
Luckily the big file they had gathered on me didn’t indicate mental instability or a past life of stalking/crime, however they did want to know how I felt about Obama. That was my limit.
I told the Agent in no uncertain terms that my thoughts were not pertinent to their investigation, that this was America and the last time I checked I was allowed to think whatever I wanted without being questioned by the Secret Service.
In fact, even if I had said what she claimed, that isn’t a threat. I told them (again) and my husband verified that the statement reported by Obama’s volunteer was a lie.
I asked them if there was a tape of the call and they said no. I said, ‘So on the word of a ticked off Obama supporter you are on my porch with no other evidence and you want to question me about my THOUGHTS!?’
They informed me that there was no evidence she was an Obama supporter…someone calling from his campaign…are you kidding?
I was not allowed to know the name of my accuser at which point they informed me that it wasn’t like I was in a court of law, YET, as if this was a good thing. I recognized this as a veiled threat.
I told them I would happily go to court since I did nothing wrong and at least then my accuser would have to face me rather than sending the thought police to my house.
They then said they were trying to do me a favor, that they came to me first before “embarrassing you by going to all your neighbors and family”, another threat? I told them to be my guest and talk to whomever they wanted but they weren’t going to investigate my thoughts on my porch.
They also informed me that it would be easier if the next time a supporter calls me I just say ‘Yeah sure count me in, or just hang up’ apparently so she won’t get her undies in a bundle and give them more useless trips. Yeah right.
I said ‘Look, someone calls me unsolicited on my cell phone to ask me to support their candidate and I can’t tell them why I don’t?’ I said I was sorry they made a wasted trip but if they had a problem with some made
up lie they needed to go talk to her about it b ecause it wasn’t my fault they had to drive from Houston for nothing. At one point I went inside and got a notepad to record their badge numbers and they refused to show me their badges. They had done the quick flip when they arrived. I asked for a card and the female Agent refused to give me one stating “You’re not going to get a card.” The male Agent gave me a card and told me I could contact Houston with any questions.
The fact that the volunteer lied, the fact that the Secret Service came to my house to question me about my thoughts and feelings and threaten to embarrass me to my neighbors and go to court if I didn’t cooperate is not really the tragedy here. Because that girl on the phone doesn’t have the pull to send the Secret Service to my home. Someone high in the ranks of a campaign working for a man who may be the next President of the United States of America felt comfortable bringing the force of the Federal Government to bear on a private citizen on nothing but the word of a partisan volunteer.
I want to file a counter complaint that false charges were made, that a false report was given to a peace officer. The Secret Service told me I cannot because they will protect the identity of the complainant. I also
want the file they have on me destroyed and I want to know that my phone isn’t tapped, et cetera. I am hearing a lot of “Out of my Jurisdiction”.Do I also hear jackboots?

I heard this on the radio a couple of days ago.
Obama volunteer: idiot AND evil and vindicitive.

I fooled around with the idea of writing a comment here and finally decided not to. Anyone who can read the email above after reading the newspaper story that precedes it, and conclude that this Hughes person is wonderful while the campaign volunteer is: “idiot AND evil and vindicitive” (sic) and the Secret Service are jackbooted gestapo,is not worth communicating with.
This item says more about the people at this blog than anything I’ve read so far.

Andrew, the comments you finally decided “not to” post, but gee somehow posted anyway, say volumes about both you and your candidate. Now let’s see how you can possibly misconstrue this. And let’s see if Secret Service people show up at my own front door.

The comment I posted was not the actual comment this instant inspired, so, at general request, here’s the comment:
First, the secret service only make personal follow-up visits to persons whose phone remarks have a seriously menacing tone. The reason they follow up is the same reason that airlines cancel flights and principals close schools; they have decided that a threat is posed to whomever they are bound to protect.
Second, the first person the secret service visit, and who they question very closely to make sure the person’s report isn’t a trivial grudge, is the person who called them. No one calls the secret service just to be nasty. It’s serious business.
For these two good reasons, I suspect that, in the email above, this person has lied about what she actually said. And I think that, instead of being idiotic, vindictive or evil, the person who called the secret service was a responsible and intelligent person who was genuinely alarmed.
Anyone, in my opinion, who feels they have to respond to an unwanted call from a campaign worker of another party with statements that all the evidence suggests were uncalled for and threatening is unbalanced. The idea of making that person a sort of hero is a sign of a similar imbalance on the part of that person’s defenders.
This is a nation of rights, but as the teachers used to say, your right to swing your fist ends at the other person’s nose. The person who wrote the email above is going to be watched for a good long time. Do I think that means the ones who are watching her are gestapo? No. They’re doing their job, which unfortunately means they sometimes have to spend time and money babysitting adults who have no more self-control or self-respect than infants.

Andrew Brown, lying is one possibility, but there are others, and we need to consider all of them before leaping to conclusions – which both you and Lonely Conservative have done.
One, let’s make syure we all understand that we really do not have all the facts. We have a few isolated reports, so it’s hard to know what really happened. Here are the possiblities as I see it:
1) The Obama caller simply misunderstood what the other person said about Obama.
2) The Obama caller lied to the Secret Service about what the other person said about Obama.
3) The person who receive the call is lying about what she said.
4) We’re only getting half the story so all of our analysis is off-track.
5) The whole thing is made up. It’s an urban legend
I put my money on #1, but there’s no way to be certain.

wow! who really cares if it’s true or not??? it’s like the whole “joe the plumber” issue. regardless of who “joe the plumber” is, the man posed a good question and is now being run thru the gutters. in this case, who cares if this story is true or false. the bottom line is this, stuff like this does happen. people get these calls, the caller gets pissed off and makes a false accusation (or vice versa). the system stinks buts it’s all we’ve got. and, until we come up with something better we’re gonna hear about stuff like this all the time. all we can do is try to right the wrongs and make good choices. there are a lot of people out there who enjoy screwing people over if they feel they’ve been wronged. watch your backs and try not to put yourself in that position. now go vote!

I don’t live in the USA, but from all the blogs I’ve read,Obama is an out and out liar–for many reasons, but the one that stays with me is the fact that he denies contact with Ayres and Rezco when there is plenty of evidence to show that he must have had contact. He has no integrity. The man CANNOT be trusted in the White House with the nuclear codes at his fingertips.
Neither has George Bush and this whole debacle was perpetrated by him originally (hanging chads etc) But anyway take consolation in the fact that the USA has a long history of ridding themselves of Presidents they didn’t like– and whether by the ballot or ending up on the hospital floor with holes in their brains–THAT IS A FACT.

A lot of this has been going on, including incidents actually reported by “the media”. You’re not allowed to disagree with this man without an attack on you personally by his supporters, including the media–look what’s happening to poor Joe The Plumber for asking a question–why are his unpaid taxes and divorce and licensing issues even being ‘investigated’ and reported and editorialized by newspapers? Is a citizen not allowed to question, now?? Pretty scary from my perspective.
My biggest peeve at the moment is all of these anti-Obama issues, only now surfacing and being punted back and forth, are the SPECIFIC issues I’ve had with Obama since he announced his run (back when I could not fathom anyone voting for this man). The Obama PR machine has done an excellent job deflecting attention from all of those real issues (and please, do we not have a problem with who Bill Ayers is TODAY, never mind back in the day). You either believe socialism/communism is moral or you do not. If you do not, you must vote McCain, whether he’s your first choice or not. Obama can call it whatever he wishes, but A is A and socialism is socialism. That alone—his lifelong love for that philosophy–ensures I will do everything I can to beat him.
I’m glad I stumbled on your blog, and don’t want you to feel so lonely–so you’re on my favorites now and I’ll “share you around”.
Nice site. I don’t have time for the drive-by silliness some people engage in, but crave intelligent discussion so will be back often.

My wife always tells me not say something for fear that someelse will take it the wrong way.
