Obama’s thoughts on the “fundamental flaw” of the Constitution

Here is more audio from a 2001 interview with Barack Obama.

“I think we can say that, ah ah, the Constitution reflected an enormous blind spot in this culture that carries on to this day and ah that ah the Framers had that same blind spot. I, I don’t think the two views are contradictory to say that it was a remarkable political document, ah, that paved the way for where we are now, and to say it also reflected the fundamental flaw of this country that continues to this day.”

What exactly does he mean by ‘fundamental flaw?” That our country isn’t socialist, that the Framers never intended for our government or our courts to be the agents of wealth redistribution?

How will this man, Barack Obama, take an oath to uphold the laws of the Constitution of the United States of America when he believes it is a “fundamentally flawed” document?

    Socialist? Reparations for slaves?

“Enormous blind spot” clearly has to do with something, anything that’s anti-democracy, anti-majority, anti-freedom.

And, of course, Obama would say what he did. Why he understands America and the Constitution better than those who wrote it, the judiciary and the legislative branch. And, yes, the people.

Perhaps the ‘fundamental flaw’ Obama refers to is contained in Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 3 of the United States Constitution:

‘Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.’

Okay, I have had enough of this *%#@. The Founding Fathers were not some white trash that slinked out of England and set up tents in the colonies. They for the most part were successful businessmen. Their beef was with a monarchy, not capitalism. Their view of representation held that one must own property to vote. Their view of slavery was obvious. To say that their view was flawed is laughable. For the time and place they built a constitution, it was perfect– The best ever constructed.
The only flaw in the constitution is in the eyes of a communist reading it.
I suggest that to vote one should again hold property. That would clear up a lot of the issues we have.

“In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution with all its faults, if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of Government but what may be a blessing to the people if well administered, and believe farther that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in Despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic Government, being incapable of any other.”

It amazes me to hear the self righteous criticism of one mans words over a document that was created by men that had also had their faults and fully admitted them. The document is far from perfect, but as has come as close to attaining fundamental rights for all as any in the history that has come before it. It is a living document that was given room to grow with the times. Because it was created by man then it is just as susceptible to error as any other thing created by humanity.

The flaw he is speaking of is the fact that “blacks were not considered part of the polity” not the whole constitution. Similar comments have been made by Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell.

Why is the entire audio clip played? I stand behind our founding fathers & the Constitution, but it’s irresponsible to only play a vague clip of what Obama said. Please post the whole audio clip so we can make a more directed comment on how wrong he is. He doesn’t make any specific reference to what he is refering to as a “fundamental flaw”. It’s very difficult to make an intelligent argument against what he said without at least knowing what he’s referring to as a “flaw”.

That’s a big thing to say the rock of our country’s philosophy has a flaw. I’d like to know exactly what he qualifies as a flaw.

  9. [...] President Obama met with some schoolchildren and was asked about the challenges of being president. His answer leaves one wondering why he’s running again, he doesn’t seem to like the job all that much. Then again, he wouldn’t make a good civics teacher, as he told them how hard it is to govern a democracy rather than a constitutional republic. Not that he’s ever been a big fan of the Constitution.
