The GOP has released their Bill Ayers-Barack Obama file. Barack Obama and his campaign insist that Obama and Ayers were just casual acquaintences.
But Obama’s Connections With Bill Ayers Are Much More Extensive Than He Or His Campaign Staff Is Willing To Admit:
In 1995, During Obama’s First State Senate Campaign, William Ayers And Wife Bernadine Dohrn Hosted A Meeting Of Chicago Liberals At Their Home For Obama, Which One Attendee Said Was Aimed At “Launching Him.” “In 1995, State Senator Alice Palmer introduced her chosen successor, Barack Obama, to a few of the district’s influential liberals at the home of two well known figures on the local left: William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. While Ayers and Dohrn may be thought of in Hyde Park as local activists, they’re better known nationally as two of the most notorious — and unrepentant — figures from the violent fringe of the 1960s anti-war movement. … ‘I can remember being one of a small group of people who came to Bill Ayers’ house to learn that Alice Palmer was stepping down from the senate and running for Congress,’ said Dr. Quentin Young, a prominent Chicago physician and advocate for single-payer health care, of the info rmal gathering at the home of Ayers and his wife, Dohrn. ‘[Palmer] identified [Obama] as her successor.’ … Dr. Young and another guest, Maria Warren, described it similarly: as an introduction to Hyde Park liberals of the handpicked successor to Palmer, a well-regarded figure on the left. ‘When I first met Barack Obama, he was giving a standard, innocuous little talk in the living room of those two legends-in-their-own-minds, Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn,’ Warren wrote on her blog in 2005. ‘They were launching him — introducing him to the Hyde Park community as the best thing since sliced bread.’” (Ben Smith, “Obama Once Visited ’60s Radicals,” The Politico, 1/22/08) Read Full Story

“A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63. But the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called “somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.”

“Hari Sevugan, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, fired back almost immediately in a statement: “Governor Palin’s comments, while offensive, are not surprising, given the McCain campaign’s statement this morning that they would be launching Swiftboat-like attacks in hopes of deflecting attention from the nation’s economic ills. In fact, the very newspaper story Governor Palin cited in hurling her shameless attack made clear that Senator Obama is not close to Bill Ayers, much less ‘pals,’ and that he has strongly condemned the despicable acts Ayers committed 40 years ago, when Obama was eight. What’s clear is that John McCain and Sarah Palin would rather spend their time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy.””

DO PEOPLE OFTEN WRITE BLURBS FOR BOOKS WHEN THEY HARDLY KNOW THE AUTHOR? DO THEY SIT ON THE SAME BOARDS OF DIRECTORS, MAKING DECISIONS TOGETHER,DIRECT MONEY INTO EACH OTHERS PROGRAMS? KIND OF HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT WAS ONLY A PASSING ACQUAINTANCE. DOES ANYONE BELIEVE THAT THE NEW YORK TIMES IS ANYTHING BUT AN ARM OF THE DNC?

People USUALLY write blurbs for books without ever meeting the author. People sit on boards of directors without coming closer to each other than their computer screens. It’s been a good twenty years and probably more since the expression to sit on a board of directors has meant sitting together in one room. I’ve been writing and publishing for over twenty years (never on politics except on forums like this where you can have fun because everyone hates you to begin with), and have seen many boards and known many authors and helped snag many reviews and blurbs. The NYTimes is a newspaper, but it’s read internationally and if any heartland American reads it they’re bound to be alarmed at its differences from the Dacron Weekend Bugle and Yard Sale Courier Herald Journal. Their coverage of Clinton and many other crooked dems before and since, makes that obvious. Of course it depends on whether you check out different things, as I do, or just want to sing along with the choir. Never saw the point of that myself.
