They do not measure long term quality of life - sustainably also relates to your financial model, not just the environment. The more socialist model, or bigger government model, is not as sustainable, as a small government model. At least 2-3 of the European countries (some showing up as a great place to be), and California (one of the only states Mercer thinks is a good place to live) is bankrupt. Sure, you can have a good quality of life for a while after you take out a big loan, and then...? So Mercer & Obama prefer bankrupt sort of countries and states?
