The San Francisco Chronicle interviewed Barack Obama in January of 2008 and for some reason kept this audio under wraps. According to NewsBusters, the article they wrote about the interview did not mention Barack Obama’s plan to bankrupt the coal industrty.
Let me sort of describe my overall policy.
What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there.
I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.
That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.
The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.
So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.
It’s just that it will bankrupt them.
Barack Obama promises to bankrupt an industry, and the media failed to report this little piece of information. Amazing, simply amazing.

My closest neighbor works for a coal fired power plant. The plant is old and needs to be updated to meet Federal standards. The plant produces over a $1 million a day profit for the company during peak summer months. That plant will be retired soon, as the cost of upgrading makes it not profitable. As the old plants go off line energy prices go up.
Our local co-operative sent out a letter prior to the Cap and Trade vote. They suggested that if the Cap and Trade Bill passed many in the U.S. would not be able to afford power in the near future.
What obama thinks and says has very little to do with reality. If the socialists in congress can get a majority of “blue dogs” to vote with them, we are in trouble on every front. No coal will be just one.
Thanks for bringing the Coal issue to the light.

SA, let’s hope this came out it in time. Most of the swing states are also coal states. Look forward to rolling brown outs.

The Al Gore liberal democrats like Pelosi,Reid,Obama and many others are focused on global warming and in my mind have not fully thought out the high cost of energy their plan would create .
Gore wants to end oil use as fuel in 10 years !
So lets see the liberal dems do not want oil shale use, drastic reduction in oil consumption in 10 years,no nuclear power plants and now expensive clean coal !
McCain proposed a cap and trade system but it’s open ended.Al Gore/Pelosi want immediate action to reduce eliminate fossil fuels.
McCain wants multiple energy sources ( no fixed time table) .This sensible plan will have less shock to the economy than Gore/Pelosi/Obama.
