We had some very bad news this weekend in Central New York. A little girl was abused by her mother and her mother’s boyfriend. It was so bad that this innocent little girl died. Her mother was 18 years old. Her mother’s boyfriend was 15 years old. They punished little 20 month old Imani Jennings for potty training accidents.
They left her alone for hours at a time. When they returned home they abused her for being human. I wanted to cry when I read about it. Tonight I heard that in response to this tragedy the community where little Imani lived is going to start a ‘neighbor to neighbor’ program. I applaud them for that. Yet I can’t help but wonder where the community was to help this little girl while she still had a chance.
Please don’t get me wrong. I don’t blame anyone for this crime except the perpetrators. My questions go deeper than that. Has government become so big that we believe big government is going to save us and we don’t need friends, family and neighbors? If so, I’m afraid this sort of tragedy will become commonplace.

This is horrible. I never lived in them but still I miss the days of Mayberry (I guess my upbringing in Middle Georgia was sort of like Mayberry).
