President Bush has taken a beating lately. From the press, the Democrats and the Republicans. But many seem to forget that the first priority of our government is our safety.
As individuals we should be free to succeed or fail as our abilities and work ethic allow. But as individuals we cannot, on our own, protect ourselves from foreign attack. That is the job of our government. For many conservatives, that is one of the few roles of the government for which we are happy to pay taxes. Our safety as a nation is the government’s responsibility.
People have been hollering about Bush violating our rights with the Patriot Act. They think he’s an evil war monger for holding enemy combatants (who wear the uniform of no country) in Guantanomo. Yet they fail to give him credit for keeping us safe. The 9/11 attacks were planned under President Clinton, yet I am not blaming President Clinton for those attacks, I blame the attackers.
Since 9/11/01 there has been no terrorist attack on American soil. And President Bush, as he leaves office, despite the trashing he’s taken from his predecessor, will do everything he can to ensure a smooth transition for the next administration. He is putting country before party or politics. That is all he cares about. Yet he will surely receive no recognition from the media or the Democrats. That makes me sad.
I have my disputes with some of President Bush’s policies. But he is a good and decent man who has the best interests of our country at heart. The way he’s been treated is a disgrace.
I noticed Barack Obama’s tone seemed to change a bit at his first press conference as president-elect. Could it be that he after seeing classified intelligence he finally understands what we are up against? I hope and pray that he does.
Like the rest of us, politicians are human. The Republicans lost their way on domestic issues. They promised smaller government and gave us bigger government. We have ourselves a big economic hole to dig out of. But when it comes to our security, the Republicans have not lost their way, even when it makes them unpopular. For that I am grateful.

No one ever gets credit for what was prevented. Suppose if Bush prevented 9/11, No one would ever know.

I, too, believe President Bush has been maligned by the media and the American people. He did keep us safe these past seven years and was willing to take the heat personally to save U.S. lives. Anyone who researches the 700 tons of uranium that was removed from Iraq and sent to Canada will recognize that as the “WMD’s” that supposedly never existed. In an effort to keep its existance secret and protect people in that region, the “lie” was perpetuated. Country before popularity!

I haven’t heard a great number of people questioning the sincerity of Bush in that he believes he has kept us safe. Many have questioned whether his policies, despite his best intentions, have actually made us safer. What the lesson of 9/11 should have been is that the consequences of our actions today may not be felt for many years, maybe even generations down the road. Bush missed the lesson. He, like you, looked only at the immediate results. If the terrorists have shown us anything it is that they are patient and resiliant.
While we have not experienced a domestic attack, as many Americans have been killed after 9/11 as were killed on 9/11. They have not attacked us here because it is far easier to attack us elsewhere, with less cost, less risk, and far greater political effect. Far more Iraqis have been killed due to our bringing “freedom” to Iraq then under the tyranny of Sadaam Hussein. With nearly 2/3 of the Iraqi population being young, without any sense of history, and unemployed we have no idea what the unintended consequences of the Iraqi “liberation” might be. If we were to play the odds we would be well to bet against the U.S. receiving much credit.
Bush will get credit for the work he has done on AIDS and his work in Africa. For these things the credit will be deserved. As for his keeping us safe, he has done no better and perhaps no worse than the Presidents that proceeded him or that will follow after. There have been as many attacks in the world under his administration, as many Americans have died, and the world’s view of the U.S. has declined.

I too am worried about who will get the credit for the Iraq war. 20 years from now when Iran is an even more serious threat we will need an ally in the middle east that will stand by us. Iraq has been formed to be that ally along with Israel. With Iraq and Israel on our side, we can balance out the power of Iran and force them to back down. Who will get the credit for that? I would certainly hope that Bush would. Barack will probably withdraw most of the troops within his first term – if Bush were elected a 3rd time I would expect the same. We have won the war in Iraq and now it is time for the Iraqi people to take over. We must finish the war in Afghanistan. Yes, both wars were mismanaged under Bush – but the surge put Iraq back on track – and now we will have the military freedom (after more troop withdraws from Iraq) to put Afghanistan back on track. Give credit where credit is due. Bush wasn’t the best president but I believe that 20 years from now (or less) we will be glad we removed Saddam from power and put an ally in the middle east.
