Christmas around here is anything but lonely. This Christmas was one of the best our young family has enjoyed, and thankfully there was no debt added to our burden.
My husband and I had to work for a while on Christmas Eve. The boys did projects while I worked in my little home office. Later in the afternoon my husband and I took the kids to church and we enjoyed a lovely Christmas pageant before rushing home to prepare for our houseguests.
MomMom and PopPop and Aunt C arrived just in time for dinner and Uncle B wasn’t far behind. Sadly, Grandpa lives far away and travel this time of year is difficult, to say the least, so we celebrated with him by telephone. The minestrone soup was delicious and the children were thrilled to open a few presents on Christmas Eve. They especially liked the ones Grandpa sent.
Christmas morning was a bit less extravagant than it’s been in the past but the kids didn’t seem to notice. Being the only grandchildren on either side of the family has its benefits. But we all decided that less is more, especially during a national economic hangover. Even if we weren’t in the midst of an economic downturn, we thought we needed to scale back. It just seems each generation of children appreciates their blessings less than the previous generation.
Santa left us Rock Band for our Wii. I’m the lead singer of the LonelyCon Family Band. Our seven year old son is the drummer and my husband plays guitar. Our four year old backs us up with his new drum set. We didn’t just pick these roles. It just so happened Little D was the best at drumming, I was the best at singing and Daddy’s awesome on the guitar. We tried other roles and got booed off the stage. Hey, you have to go with what works! We’ve been rocking the house since Christmas morning. We almost didn’t have Christmas dinner on the table in time!
But we did get dinner on the table and Grandma joined us for a feast fit for kings. The prime rib “open the oven under penalty of death” recipe againts served us well. The turkey breast was moist and delicious and somehow the sides all stayed warm. Even my cherry pie that looked a bit like cherry stew was delicious.
I’m thankful I’m not a talk show host, as two days of being lead singer in a rock band has taken its toll on my voice. Yet I’ve still managed to hit the right notes at the right time so we’ve already achieved level three, together as a family. The kids said this was there best Christmas ever.
Thankfully there was very little talk about politics. We don’t all agree politically, but oddly, we did agree that the way Barack Obama’s been turned into the new Messiah is really creepy, especially at Christmas time.
I hope you enjoyed your Christmas as much as we did. If not, I would suggest watching reruns of House On USA. There’s nothing like seeing someone puke up blood, have their hand chopped off or suffer intense pain to make you count your blessings.

LC, great post – many smiles. What a fun thing to do as a family!!!! Singing and strumming and drumming – oh my! Can we be happier than that? What a wonderful Christmas. Thanks for giving us a glimpse.
