Hey Folks – Unemployment is Fun!

Leave it to the Boston Globe to glamourize unemployment. Not that I would’t mind a little time off, but come on! Everyone knows the longer you’re out of work the harder it is to find employment once you’re ready to go back.

As the ranks of the nation’s unemployed grows, more Americans are facing the reality of life without work. Despite the grim task of making ends meet (firing the nanny, bailing on Whole Foods, applying for unemployment), there is a newly forming society of people who are making the best of being laid off. They are rediscovering hobbies. They are greeting kids at the school bus. They are remembering what daylight actually looks like.

And the massive layoffs by companies nationwide – nearly 600,000 jobs were lost last month – has helped remove the stigma and shame of being unemployed, according to John A. Challenger, chief executive of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, a Chicago outplacement firm.

“There’s less of a ‘why aren’t you working attitude’ that is giving people some extra space and freedom to explore new directions and just take time off to do the things they’ve wanted to do, whether it’s spending more time with children, taking a class, or traveling around the world,” Challenger said.

Just what our cash strapped states need – encouragement to extend unemployment!

I can say working for spirit only 3 days a week for 4 months I was bored off my rocker. SO! To offset some of my “down time” I started a small buisness besides my home improvement business. Im happy to say this last weekend it started to pay off and i made more money this weekend than I make for a whole week at my aircraft job full time! This should be the goal of others. To keep busy. A lay off should NEVER be a holiday.

Good for you William! My hubby does home remodelling. He’s been planning to start his own business, but is waiting because of the economic down turn. Gov. Paterson proposed taxing labor on home improvement plus a double tax on materials if the contractor buys the materials. I hope business keeps up for you!

Yeah, They kinda stuck it to contractors after we bombed the crap out of Iraq they sent all our building supplies to Iraq to rebuild. That almost doubled the cost of wood and stuff for a while. Hell what better way to improve your life by picking a fight and then letting them rebuild your town for you! I Have really slowed down on home improvement cause it seems your always getting taken. Either by the customer or the General contractor. Now I only work for people I trust like friends and family. My other business I just started is Breeding Angelfish, tetras and Discus fish. Kinda weird I know. But it makes money and helps me to relax if im stuck at home cause I cant work 5 days a week!

We did an addition on our home when the price of plywood skyrocketed. Timing is everything. The fish thing sounds fun….they never complain;)

“…Labor Department Defends Bank Fees on Jobless Benefits…The first transaction is free, according to the Labor Department. The rest will cost you.”…

“The White House did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment.” – Aren’t they supposed to be the most accessible White House EVER?
