I may have fractured my left index finger this evening. My mom lives in an assisted living facility and her little apartment has a really a heavy steel door that slams shut. Obviously, it’s taking some time for me to get used to it and my finger was the victim tonight. Better me than one of the kids. If you notice shorter commentary from me for a few days it’s because it takes me longer to correct my many home-made-splint induced typos than it takes to type the words in the first place. (And yes, I have health insurance but if you have ever fractured a finger you know all you need is a splint. So I decided to keep my co-pay and save a few hours of my time.)
I’ll do my best. No worries! Unlike giant CRAPulus bills, minor injuries like this one usually heal with little or no residuals.

Ice packs today, moist heat tomorrow. Don’t splint it to tight and cut off circulation, make sure it doesn’t feel colder than the rest of the fingers after you wrap it. Two aspirin every 4 hours to help hold down the swelling.
That was how I dealt with the finger I smashed with a 6″x20″x16′ cant I dropped on it running a sawmill. The fingertip is still flatter than the rest after 15 years, but it healed up without a doctor. Amazing, HUH?

I have a fat emery board I cut to size and wrapped w/tape….then ran out of tape! So it’s wrapped nice and loosely! I’ll go to thwe store tomorrow. If everyone were like us there would be no health care crisis. Don’t sweat the small stuff. (You won’t believe how long it took me to type this!)
Glad you still have the finger. My hubby’s had a few run in’s with the blades of the saw…thankfully only lost a few tips!

I had to drill my fingernail after hitting it. That’s not for the squimish. Used my power drill and a very small bit to go through the nail and let the blood out. At least, we know how to deal with the small stuff. Wonder how much that costs today? No, I don’t want to know.
Drug stores should sell those bendable metal splints.
Get well, we need you on the front line . . . ..

I’m thinking maybe it isn’t broken. It’s still purple but I took the splint off and it isn’t as painful today so hopefully it’ll be back to normal in no time.

If you end up needing a physical therapist, I know a great one close to you. I’m currently going there trying to straighten out my hand from my pre-christmas incident.

Sheldon, how is that by the way?
No, I won’t be needing PT. It’s better today. If I don’t use it much and don’t bang it on anything it’s alright.

It’s going ok but a really slow process. I’m glad you’ll be avoiding it.

Good luck. I’ve had to go to PT for another problem. It was a pain in the rear – hard to find the time. I had to use my lunch breaks to do it.
