Treasury Secretary Tim ‘Turbo Tax’ Geithner tetified again about the economy and the budget. Some senators expressed concern about the excessive spending of the federal government and the possibility of nationalizing the banks. Apparently, it was all just too funny for Mr. Geithner.
Senator Judd Gregg complained that the President’s budget will drive our nation into bankruptcy.
This budget as it’s presently constructed pass[es] on to our children a nation which they will not be able to afford,” Gregg said.
Gregg says he understands the need for the government to spend “huge amounts of money” in the short term because of the economy. “But after two or three years, this budget should be talking about getting things under control, and it doesn’t,” he warned.
The president’s budget proposes deficits of 3 percent to 4 percent of GDP after 2013, Gregg complained, and expands the size of government while “exploding the size of health care spending.”
“I’m looking at this budget, I’m saying to myself, ‘Where’s the discipline? Where is the containment?’ There isn’t any,” Gregg said to Geithner.
Geithner did the job he was sent to do, defending the budget against the attacks of Gregg and others, but he was grinning through much of the criticism.
How old is this guy? Twelve? Grinning through the criticism!?! What does he think this is, some kind of joke? I guess tax evaders aren’t too concerned about saddling the next generations with debt. The national debt wasn’t the only thing to amuse the tax cheating Treasury Secretary.
Other senators were more concerned with the administration’s actions to stabilize the financial system.
Asked if he believes Congress would vote for additional Wall Street bailout funds if the administration were to ask for them, Geithner said: “Our hope is Congress would come together and do what’s necessary” to ensure the financial system’s survival.
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), a well-known critic of the bailout, came out swinging with a French analogy.
“The first thing that France did when they went socialistic was nationalize the banks. We have skirted nationalization of the banks under you and the amount of money that we have been putting in banks all over this country,” he said.
“Senator, are you speaking in favor of nationalization or against it?” Geithner asked, grinning.
“That’s really funny,” Bunning retorted.
Isn’t that nice? The Treasury Secretary thinks the concerns of Americans about nationalizing the banks is a big joke. Oh yeah, that’s hilarious! The debt of our nation? A real knee slapper!
Are there any adults working in this administration?
