Breaking News! Today President Obama said things aren’t as bad as they seem.
Challenged to provide encouragement as the nation’s “confidence builder in chief,” Obama said Americans shouldn’t be whipsawed by bursts of either bad or good news and he was “highly optimistic” about the long term.
Does this mean we can let this good crisis go to waste and not be whipsawed into turning these United States of America into the United Socialist States of America? Pretty please?

I am highly optimistic as well – particularly for the next round of elections. If Democrats really thought Stimulus I was going to work, they wouldn’t be so concerned as to propose a Stimulus II in the face of (this time) some serious opposition.
The real danger here is that Democrats are going to see their one and only chance to railroad through some very damaging policies it may take a generation to reverse – something like universal health care. Without increasing the supply of medical providers, the natural result of introducing millions of new customers who are unconcerned about cost will be massive shortages and rationing of health care services.

MAS-Sadly, you’re right. We’re fraught with danger and we’re at a tipping point right now. Which way things will tip is the question.
