Is Tax Freedom Day Really Something to Celebrate?

For me, living in New York, Tax Freedom Day won’t come until April 25. Ouch. We’re the third most taxed state in the union, behind only Connecticut and New Jersey. California and Maryland are right behind us in the top five most taxed states. Wow, that’s something to be proud of. No wonder employers flee these states. Staying here is like walking up to a mugger and just handing over your wallet.

Alaskans have the earliest Tax Freedom Day, March 25, followed by Louisana on March 28. That’s interesting, both states have conservative governors in Sarah Palin and Bobby Jindal. If you live in Alaska or Louisana you have a bit more to celebrate on Tax Freedom Day because you pay less of your income in taxes than the other 48 states. Congratulations.

But even so, working three out of twelve months to fork over your earnings to an ever expanding government is nothing to cheer about. And for those of us in New York who work four out of twelve months it’s downright depressing. That’s a third of my life! Maybe it’s time to think about relocating. If I’m going to get mugged every day I’d rather it be for a quarter of my days than a full third.
