Poor Caroline Kennedy. First she wasn’t chosen by Governor Paterson to replace Hillary Clinton in the US Senate. If that weren’t bad enough, now she’s been dissed by the Vatican!
Reports vary on how the proposed-ambassadorship is happening. Senator John Kerry is reported to have asked President Obama to consider Caroline Kennedy for the ambassadorship. From there it is unclear whether the White House actually made the formal proposal to the Vatican. The Telegraph says the Vatican “has blocked the appointment of Caroline Kennedy as U.S. Ambassador.” Either the proposal was formally or informally presented, or leaked to get a Vatican response. Either way, it appears the Vatican answered with an emphatic ‘no.’
Kennedy’s support for abortion disqualified her from the position, said an Italian publication, Il Giornale. American Catholics are outraged. C. J. Doyle, the executive director of The Massachusetts Catholic Action League said: “It’s inappropriate to appoint someone who pretends to be a Catholic but rejects the fundamental teachings of the Church.”
Raymond L. Flynn, a former U.S. Vatican Ambassador said Kennedy’s appointment would be “a mistake.” It’s imperative, it’s essential that the person who represents us to the Holy See be a person who has pro-life values.”
Caroline’s having a rough year. Who knew it would be so hard for a Kennedy to get herself appointed to an un-elected position.
Too bad the Pope couldn’t stop the President’s address at Notre Dame. That would really send a strong message.
