Obama Admin to Union Workers: You Don’t Need to See How Your Dues Money is Spent

Not only has the promise of the most transparent administation ever gone up in smoke, the lack of transparency isn’t going to stop with the federal government. The Obama administration is working to allow unions to thwart laws that require disclosure of how union dues are spent. According to former secretary of labor Elaine Chao:

Fifty years ago, Congress passed the landmark Landrum-Griffin Act to protect rank-and-file union members from malfeasance by union leaders. Senate hearings had uncovered serious corruption and other unethical practices inside the labor movement, and a bipartisan coalition emerged to shine the light of disclosure on union practices.

Nevertheless, Democrats in Congress and in the executive branch have often attempted to undercut that law’s financial reporting and disclosure requirements. Prior to reforms adopted in the George W. Bush administration, for example, one union could get away with reporting a $62 million expenditure as nothing more than “contributions, gifts, and grants to local affiliates” — with no further explanation. Unfortunately, the Obama administration is already showing that it wants to return to this nontransparent standard of financial disclosure.

Within days of the inauguration, the new leadership at the Labor Department moved to delay implementing a regulation finalized in January that would have shed much needed light on how union managers compensate themselves with union dues. The regulation required disclosure of receipts for expenditures and for the purchase and sale of union assets — disclosures that would help deter embezzlement. The administration has since moved even more aggressively, initiating proceedings to rescind this rule and others promulgated when I was secretary of labor.

If Obama and the democrats have their way unions will be able to bully workers into joining unions while not allowing those workers to know how their dues are being spent. Is there anyone out there who still believes Barack Obama and the democrats care about America’s workers?

Waiting for the “champions of the working man” to condemn this is like waiting for the”women’s groups” to come to the defense of Miss California. Just another typical liberal bunch of lying hypocrates.

This is pay back for helping Barry O get elected.

    Next up: Card Check.

My wife HAS to be in a union. She works at a Union shop and has NO CHOICE.

Every election she literally gets a box in the mail with materials that support the Democrats. One year she got a hat. Every year she gets a slick video or CD that must have cost a bunch of $$ to produce.

Unions are NOT out for the members…they are out for themselves.

How awful! I was talking to a woman at the Tea Party and she said she works for a school. She chose not to join the union but found out they took union dues out of her paycheck anyway.

LC: These funds are confiscated to pay for the “benefits” of arbitration the union provides for all teachers, members or not.
