President Obama named federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as his pick for the Supreme Court this morning. It looks like he’s making up for disappointing the left wing base with this choice.
Here she says that the Court of Appeals is where policy is made. That’s not exactly what the Founders had in mind.
When it comes to gender and race, Judge Sotomayor seems to believe those attributes should play a role in a judge’s decision making process.
“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”
Not only does Judge Sotomayor believe the courts should make policy, and one’s life experiences should shape judicial philosophy, she’s also known as a bully that isn’t even that bright.
“She has an inflated opinion of herself, and is domineering during oral arguments, but her questions aren’t penetrating and don’t get to the heart of the issue.”
Below is video of Sotomayor’s speech after President Obama introduced her.
Carl Platt Liebau summed up this pick quite nicely.
Telling, isn’t it, if ethnicity, gender and politics trumped every other consideration for the President?
Update: Sotomayor was the appeals judge in the reverse discrimation case filed by Connecticut firefighters.
U.S. Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor, mentioned as a possible Supreme Court nominee, voted to deny a racial discrimination claim in a 2008 decision. She dismissed the case in a one-paragraph statement that, in the opinion of one dissenting judge, ignored the evidence and did not even address the constitutional issues raised by the case.
The case, Ricci v. DeStefano, involved a group of 19 white firefighters and one Hispanic firefighter who filed suit in 2003 claiming that the city of New Haven, Conn., engaged in racial discrimination when it threw out the results of two promotion tests because none of the city’s black applicants had passed the tests.
Each of the plaintiffs had passed the exam. The case is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Apparently, Sotomayor believes discrimination against whites is perfectly legal and acceptable.

And there goes another piece of whatever’s left of the Constitution. Pretty soon we can just forget all about the rule of law in this country and admit that we are just another banana republic. Does the name Hugo Chavez sound familiar?

No surprise here.
ANY person selected would have been such that any dissagreement would simple be countered with charges of racism.
So let me pretend to be a lib for a few minutes:
I congratulate MS Sotomayor.
I’m concerned for her health so she should lose a few pounds as her current appearance indicates she is at risk for diabetes and heart disease.
