John Dingell says freedom has failed

Rep. John Dingell spoke on the House floor Friday June 12 about the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. At about 1:59 on the video Dingell said “we tried volunteerism and volunteerism has failed.” What he means is that we tried freedom and freedom failed. He believes the American people are so stupid that we must give up our freedoms and let the government make our decisions for us. What an insult! H/T Mike Church

Bungalo Bill has an interesting take on Dingell’s remarks:

Dingell was on the floor last week commenting on how many Americans are in the grave because of cigarettes and other vices that he feels Americans need protection from. Dingell proudly said he will be following this bill with bills to protect Americans from dangerous food and then pharmaceuticals as he stumped for the cigarette laws. This man shows how out of control Congress is. Americans are no longer able to handle the freedom the forefathers granted them and now he curses them by telling the American people he will strip them of their freedoms through bills that protect. Last I heard, tobacco wasn’t illegal, food wasn’t illegal, and pharmaceuticals aren’t illegal, but this Congressman isn’t going to stop until you can’t get any of these things without his permission. Michigan, why do you keep sending people like Dingell to office?

Yeah, Michigan! Why? Why?

The nanny state is in full bloom. There are apparently just too few of us who believe in independence to stop this steamroller. Obama’s hijacking of healthcare will just cement the arrogant elitists in DC’s control over how you live your life. Funny thing is, the states took in about $14billion in cigarette tax revenues in 2008, and I seriously doubt they want to give that up. Like we’ve always said, just make it illegal if ya really think its so bad!

Do any of you smoke? I do. I started when I was 14 (and yeah, I regret that). Why did you start or continue smoking? Was it because of cartoon characters, pretty colors, or candy flavoring? Uh, nooooooo…. I seriously doubt any of us started smoking due to those things. And frankly, if my mother hadn’t made such a big deal about it and tried to blame someone else (my best friend) for it, I would not have continued smoking. It wasn’t important to me. My one act of rebellion, I suppose.

These folks just don’t have a clue as to the underlying reasons people do things or the fact that in this country we do have the right to be stupid. If my employer wants to say “fine, but I’m not paying for your healthcare” that would be just fine by me. It would be his right. And I would have to decide which one I wanted more, wouldn’t I?

I don’t ever want other people looking out for what’s best for me–I still want the right to be stupid. Right now I’m looking to quit because I resent sending these bozos more of my money.
