The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act – AKA Porkulus, Suckubus, Stimulus, Generational Theft Act – was billed as a way to create jobs and repair our “crumbling infrastructure.” What a joke.
The image of economic stimulus spending in New York so far is one of politicians in suits and hardhats posing in front of orange barrels and talking about new jobs. But so far, the stimulus spending has paid for more social services than public works.
New York state expects to spend 84 percent of its $26 billion in federal money on Medicaid, unemployment benefits, school aid, nutrition, public health programs, one-time Social Security payments, Head Start, college grants, and other social and school support.
84% to welfare! How is that supposed to create jobs? It will give people incentive not to go back to work – hold out for something better.
But they are planning to replace an old bridge – one that was already scheduled to be replaced. So the 26 jobs created would have been created without mortgaging our children’s future. The funniest part is Rep. Dan Maffei.
Maffei does not have a lot of options for a photo opportunity so far.
“It is frustrating to the congressman who wants to stand in front of a brand new building and pump his arm and say ‘I got this for you,’ ” Maffei said.
Oh, poor freshman congressman Dan Maffei isn’t getting any photo ops with our children’s money. Poor baby. He should go pose down at the unemployment line. With any luck he’ll be part of that line in 2011.

I agree that welfare is a little out of control but you can’t really group education in with that.
