Say it ain’t so! Largest tax hike in American history set to pass the House?

This is depressing. Powerline is reporting that Nancy Pelosi made a deal to make sure she can ram the Waxman-Markey-tax-anything-and-everything bill through the house.

Nancy Pelosi thinks she has barely enough votes to pass one of the great follies in legislative history, the carbon tax. It will be close, though: Pelosi actually told Al Gore to stay in Tennessee rather than participate in a last-minutes lobbying blitz. Most likely Pelosi didn’t want to remind Congressmen needlessly that the whole point of this exercise is supposed to be fighting global warming, a theory that has fallen into scientific disrepute and on which Americans divide evenly, at best.

What seems to have tipped the balance is a deal Pelosi struck with Minnesota’s Collin Peterson, Chairman of the Agriculture Committee, providing for special treatment for ethanol under the act. That was enough, apparently, to get Peterson and a number of other farm-state Democrats on board. The extent to which farm-state politics have been driven by ethanol in recent years is a story–a scandal, really–that has not yet been properly told.

Click here for a graph of the monstrous federal bureaucracy this will create. You know – on top of the already monstrous federal bureaucracy we’re already saddled with. And what a time to pass such idiotic legislation.

What a nightmare! As is this bill will cost 2.5 million (yes, MILLION) American jobs, a decrease in GDP of 2.5% and the price of gasoline to increase by about 58%! But hey, who’s counting? Not the democrats. It’s doubtful any of them have even read the bill.

But don’t despair. There’s still hope! The United States Senate!

The Senate is likely to pass a bill (if it passes one at all) that is even more loaded with special interest favors than the House version. If a “climate change” bill eventually does become law, it will probably consist of little but a gift bag for favored Democratic Party constituencies, funded by what may be the biggest tax increase in American history.

Oh well, I suppose we’re all getting used to paying for gift bags for favored democrat constituencies. If we’re really lucky only 2 million Americans will lose their jobs.

Oh, one more thing, the Republicans have a bill that would have created jobs. Gee, there’s a novel thought. But the democrats refuse to consider it.

Do people really believe our national politicians are looking out for us?

It is really very good policy. Pelosi holds loads of stock in “clean energy” and will become even richer. So will Algore. So it must be good, even if it wrecks our economy. Why can’t you understand this?
