David Letterman has apologized to Governor Palin, her family, and his viewers for the vile jokes he told on his show last week. Perhaps it was the calls for him to be fired, or the pulling of ads from his show, or the knowledge that 41% of Americans consider themselves to be conservative. People make mistakes all the time. Letterman certainly made a big mistake. Should he be forgiven? His apology will air later tonight.
I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception. And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. That it was misunderstood.” (audience applauds) “Thank you. So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future. Thank you very much.” (audience applause) Read full text.
The problem isn’t even so much the raunchy jokes Letterman told. It goes beyond Letterman. It’s the hatred many in the media and entertainment business hold for conservatives, especially conservative women. The disdain by these people for conservatives is so prevalent most people don’t even notice. It wasn’t until Letterman completely crossed a line that anyone gave it a second glance.
Only time will tell if David Letterman learned anything.
