Nanny state bites Obama’s Surgeon General pick in the behind

President Obama’s pick for Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin, is getting bitten in the rear by the very nanny state Obama wants to create.

Full disclosure: I haven’t had the time to research Dr. Benjamin so I don’t have an opinion on her qualifications for the job (other than since Obama picked her there must be something wrong.)

Dr. Regina M. Benjamin, Obama’s pick for the next surgeon general, was hailed as a MacArthur Grant genius who had championed the poor at a medical clinic she set up in Katrina-ravaged Alabama.

But the full-figured African-American nominee is also under fire for being overweight in a nation where 34 percent of all Americans aged 20 and over are obese.

Critics and supporters across the blogsphere have commented on photos of Benjamin’s round cheeks, saying she sends the wrong message as the public face of America’s health initiatives.

As far as I’m concerned, Dr. Benjamin should be judged on her merits, not her figure. Could she stand to lose a few pounds? Probably. Does that make her unqualified? No. I’ve never looked at an overweight physician and thought “Gee, why don’t I get fat like my doctor.”

This is the problem with the nanny state. They want us all to be perfect and are perfectly willing to kick the imperfect to the curb. Unfortunately for them, we are all human.

I saw those comments about her weight and as someone who will never, genetically, be built like a Barbie doll, I was really irritated on her behalf. I recently had this argument with someone: my background includes short, compact, sturdy people (Irish, Scots, Dutch, etc)—-my friend is wholly Nordic (tall, thin, metabolism running at high speed). She is thin, but fit? No; sick often and has no endurance. I am fat, but fit? YES. I never get sick and can outpace her all day long on a strenuous hike, and my body uses only what it needs and stores the rest. Hers consumes every calorie instantly and will begin to starve if she doesn’t eat AGAIN.

People (especially Liberal idiots and elitists) need to understand that we are not all genetically identical and are not all going to share the same body type–and beyond that, carrying “extra” weight as defined by thin people, does NOT mean you are unhealthy.

Because she belongs to Team Obama, I am instantly suspect about her—-but her body type is completely irrelevant to her understanding of health issues.

    SO THERE.
