Last night President Obama appeared on television for the umpteenth time to talk about health care. You can’t turn on the television these days without that man’s face and voice assaulting your senses. Thankfully, I was away from the television last night so I missed his remarks. In hindsight, I kind of wished I watched and listened just to witness him repeatedly making stupid comments.
The doozy was the one about how physicians perform tonsillectomies rather than prescribing medication so they can make more money. How absurd! (And have you noticed his obsession with pills?) Apparently ENT surgeons also found his comments to be ridiculous, and no doubt highly insulting. It didn’t take long for them to issue a response.
In reply, the AAO-HNS stated, “We, too, are in favor of evidence-based medicine that supports quality patient care. President Obama’s statement highlights the complexity of medical decisions like this. However, the AAO-HNS is disappointed by the President’s portrayal of the decision making processes by the physicians who perform these surgeries. In many cases, tonsillectomy may be a more effective treatment, and less costly, than prolonged or repeated treatments for an infected throat.
They were far too diplomatic as far as I’m concerned. But he is the man who wants to take over their industry. I guess they find it necessary to use guarded language when it comes to Obama. Just look at the way he went after Seantor Jim DeMint.

The president’s remarks in regard to tonsillectomy further characterize his ignorance of the medical field, and his obvious disdain for physicians in general. I would hope the AMA would have a stronger rebuttal, and withdraw their support for his reform plans.

I had my tonsils taken out when I was 12 by a Dr in it for the money. He looked at me for 5 minutes, before he decided it was appropriate to go ahead and book an operation. And for that 5-10 minute consultation we were charged $175.
Since then, whenever I get a throat infection, it is considerably worse – I experience all the symptoms I had for the 3.5 weeks post tonsillectomy.
I support Obama for this decision. Whilst there are many good and considerate doctors, I know of docs who are in the business primarily for the money.
