Governor’s Day at the Fair wasn’t so great for the Governor. The funniest part of the story is the woman who declined having her picture taken with Paterson. Heh.
Thursday at the fair, Paterson met with a smaller and more critical crowd, reflecting his lower standing in popularity polls and his need to rouse more public support if he wants to keep his job and return to the fair as governor in future years. Paterson has been struggling this year, his second in office, with widespread criticism of his handling of the state budget, his office’s treatment of senatorial hopeful Caroline Kennedy, and the Republican coup in the state Senate.
While walking through the Horticulture Building, Paterson was approached by a man who said he was “disappointed” in the governor for publicly accusing media outlets of racism.
“I thought you were better than that,” said the man, who declined to give his name.
While Paterson ate lunch (a Gianelli sausage, coleslaw and a soda), a woman yelled at him: “Think about the common man.”
A voice in a crowd surrounding Paterson on a grassy knoll said, “He’s lucky I didn’t bring my turnips” as they joked about lobbing one at the governor, while a woman nearby declined several offers to have her photograph taken with Paterson.
