Why is it that the President and the democrats constantly accuse opponents of their plan for health care reform of offering no alternative proposals. There are plenty of things that can be done to bring down the cost of health insurance.
The Wall Street Journal ran an op-ed from John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Markets, offering eight sensible recommendations for making health insurance more affordable.
- Removing obstacles to creating high deductible plans and HSA’s, which have worked well for Whole Foods’ employees.
- Giving individuals the same tax breaks as employers who purchase health insurance policies.
- Repealing all state laws preventing insurance companies from competing across state lines.
- Repealing government mandates on what insurers must cover.
- Enacting tort reform so physicians aren’t forced to pass along the cost of malpractice premiums to patients.
- Making costs transparent so consumers know the true cost of medical care.
- Reforming Medicare which is bankrupt.
- Revising tax forms so Americans can easily make tax-deductible, voluntary donations to help those who cannot afford health insurance.
A related op-ed from the editors of the Wall Street Journal explains why health insurance is so expensive, especially in states like New York and New Jersey. If you guessed it has something to do with government mandates and regulations, you’d be right. Yet, ObummerCare would impose the New York model on the entire nation.
In the video below Gerald Seib spoke to Trace Gallagher about some common sense proposals that won’t bankrupt the nation. None of these ideas are new, but they involve the free market and personal responsibility. Which is why the democrats don’t like them. Just don’t believe it when they tell you opponents of their plan don’t offer any solutions.

Ah, lift restrictions and allow the free market to do what it does best. That’s a crazy idea. We all know that the private sector is incapable of doing anything worthwhile without being forced to by government. I mean, where do you think all of the innovations America has produced has come from? Oh, wait…

This recovering Republican is always looking for positive ideas from conservatives. I agree with much of that list, but the litigant in me understands the need to keep doctors and pharmaceutical companies under threat of ruin if they get away with murder and or malpractice.
I have little confidence that men will restrain their appetites – and therefore I have forsaken libertarian ideals for weary pragmatism.
We need government to protect us from corporations – foreign and domestic. Corporate culture, speech, and amoral profit and goal oriented activities have to be monitored and checked by the population at large.
Private individual capitalists cannot compete with the corporate business model.
Society has a right to defend itself from predation – from enemies foreign and domestic.
Capitalism will not survive corporatism.
That said.. insurance, medicine and pharma cannot be dictated by corporate interests.
