Oh, to live under a socialist regime! It must be so nice – returning to nature without the help of an environmental lobby. Utopia!
Do you remember life before toilet paper? No? Neither do I, and I certainly don’t want a life with no toilet paper. Environmentalists be damned!
For the people of Cuba, a life without toilet paper may soon be a reality.
HAVANA (Reuters) – Cuba, in the grip of a serious economic crisis, is running short of toilet paper and may not get sufficient supplies until the end of the year, officials with state-run companies said on Friday.
Officials said they were lowering the prices of 24 basic goods to help Cubans get through the difficulties provoked in part by the global financial crisis and three destructive hurricanes that struck the island last year.
Cuba’s financial reserves have been depleted by increased spending for imports and reduced export income, which has forced the communist-led government to take extraordinary measures to keep the economy afloat.
“The corporation has taken all the steps so that at the end of the year there will be an important importation of toilet paper,” an official with state conglomerate Cimex said on state-run Radio Rebelde.
The shipment will enable the state-run company “to supply this demand that today is presenting problems,” he said.
Cuba both imports toilet paper and produces its own, but does not currently have enough raw materials to make it, he said.
This is what happens when statists believe they can control the economy. In a free economy, recessions come and go. In a communist or socialist economy, a recession leads to major shortages in basic necessities. But hey, they’re all in it together!
The story goes on to quote Cubans who complain their monthly food subsidy only covers two weeks worth of food. And the Cuban government is cutting prices on products, but not essential products the people really need.
It’s probably all for the better, because once you’re out of toilet paper you’ll probably want to reduce your food and beverage consumption.
And they call us crazy for worrying about socialism?

Oh, I don’t think so. If there is anything I value in life it is my time in the “library”. So, of course, I would not give up my TP. I’d stand against socialism for that reason alone.

I’m assuming if they are out of TP they’re also out of flushable wipes!

Toilet paper has not been available to ordinary Cuban citizens for many years. During our cruise of Cuba some years ago toilet paper was only available to Communist Party apparatchiks and in the tourist hotels. Toothpaste, tooth brushes, fresh vegetables and bath soap are extremely scarce as well. Such are the joys of the “workers

What a stupid article! The problem with you stupid yanks is you choose to only go so far into an argument until it suits. O evil socialism you all scream as you cower in your houses clutching your desert eagle .50 just in case an evil Russia appears. It’s clearly obvious that Cuba may struggle to achieve high levels of living providing you lot continue to shut off trade. Cuba may not be wiping its arse with double layered super soft TP that your brainwashed in the US to need as opposed to a doctor or a fair education and start in life.
