I just saw Senator Chuck Schumer on my TV promoting a Syracuse Crunch outdoor hockey game. I like hockey and an outdoor game might be fun (as long as it isn’t in the winter time during a blizzard). But why is a United States senator promoting it? Here’s what the Syracuse Post Standard has to say about it:
If having friends in high places really counts for something, the Syracuse Crunch will be playing an outdoors game this season at the State Fairgrounds.
And friends don’t come a lot higher than U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer.
Schumer stopped by the Onondaga County War Memorial on Monday to lend his considerable weight to Syracuse’s efforts to put on the outdoors contest, which would be the first in AHL history.
It was mostly a ceremonial stop, but Schumer made ittclear he wants the involved parties – the Crunch, the State Fairgrounds, the Oncenter, county government officials – to sit down ASAP and nail down the costs.
Then, Schumer said he will pursue potential sources of funding at the state and federal levels to make it happen.
“It will all be good for the area,” he said. “Once we have a road map, I’ll do everything in my power.”
Aha, he gets a little free air time on local televesion and a chance to promise some pork from the deficit challenged federal government.
This is exactly what’s wrong with the government. It’s run by a bunch of yahoos in both parties who see the federal Treasury as their own little piggy bank. The federal government has no business sending money to Onondaga County New York, or any other county in the nation, for that matter. How is funding hockey games an essential role of the federal government?
Instead of plugging outdoor hockey games, perhaps Senator Schumer can schedule a town hall meeting to explain to us why he’s willing to skirt normal legislative channels to ram the government’s takeover of our health care through the Senate. Is he afraid of what he might hear?
Update: Schumer’s mug just appeared on the 11:00 PM news. Thanks alot, just what I need to see before going to sleep.
Where’s my sedative?
