President Obama will be appearing before congress again tonight for yet another big, important speech. Reportedly, he will be stressing his support for a public option. He’s got to keep those Kossaks happy. He seems to have forgotten the process by which bills make it through the House and Senate. Or he thinks he has some mystical power to make senators and congressmen vote against the desires of their constituents.
Max Baucus came out this afternoon to say the Senate does not have the votes to pass a bill that includes a public option. Doesn’t Obama talk to these people? Baucus isn’t a Republican. He even said he’ll go forward without Republicans if necessary, so why isn’t Obama talking to him?
But he made clear that the so-called “public option” would not be part of any deal with his name on it.
“The public option cannot pass the Senate,” Baucus said. “I could be wrong, but it’s my belief that the public option cannot pass.”
Speaking of Obama’s speech tonight. Robert Gibbs took a swipe at the Fox network for not airing the speech (even though Fox News will) on Fox and Friends this morning.
“I do hope people will check in to the reality of what’s going on in America rather than the distraction of a reality TV show.”
Funny, many of us were saying the same thing last fall, when people really weren’t paying attention. They saw a logo, heard “hope and change” and voted for a snake oil salesman. Had they been paying attention in the fall, Gibbs would have a different job and we wouldn’t be subjected to another speech by his boss. Unfortunately, it’s a little late for that, and most people now realize listening to Obama speak is akin to reading a Jayson Blair article. They know they won’t be getting the real story, so why bother.
