Dilemma: What’s a mom to do? Creepy President to deliver speech to all public school children! – Updated

President Obama will be delivering a speech to all public school children on September 8, 2009. Click here for a “Menu of Activities” for teachers of children from PreK to Grade 6. Service Wire has more information. Here’s a sampling of questions for the children:

What is the President trying to tell me?

What is the President asking me to do?

What new ideas and actions is the President challenging me to think about?

September 8 is my kids’ first day of school. The address is to be delivered at 1:00 PM. Do I pull them out of school on the first day? My younger son is starting Kindergarten. I don’t want to wreck his first day of school (not that Obama won’t wreck it.) My husband thinks I’m blowing this out of proportion. He said our kids can withstand a 10 minute speech by Dear Leader. A friend of mine isn’t so sure, she said if the kids can’t talk about God in school she sure doesn’t want Obama talking to her kids in school. I second that.

I’m tempted to call our church and enroll them in school there. But they like their school and should be free from indoctrination. I will call our school to find out if they will definitely broadcast the speech.

Here’s video of Dear Leader telling student reporter Damon Weaver about his upcoming speech to America’s children.

Video via Michelle Malkin

Addendum: In the 2 1/2 years my son was in school while George Bush was president I never noticed any Bush propaganda in the school. I once saw a poster made by a student titled “Why I Hate President Bush”. I didn’t bother reading the rest of it.

Update: I almost forgot about this creepy child indoctrination video from last fall. Thanks to Legal Insurrection for the reminder.

If my kids come home singing something like this you’re going to see a morning post begging for donations for private school tuition.

But seriously, as for public education being “free” – ha! You haven’t seen the “school tax” portion of my property tax bill. The same bill I paid before my kids were born and before they were in school and will continue to pay until I die or move out of state. That makes it a bit unaffordable to cough up just as much to send the kids to private school. Which is why I’m a proponent of private school vouchers. Then the “free” schools would have to compete with the private schools. And parents who don’t have the financial means of the Obamas and the Kennedys of the world would have a choice as to whether we want to send our children into indoctrination camps.

Update 9/2/09: I called the superintendent’s office of my school district and the woman I spoke to had not heard about this. She sounded surprised. I then called our school and was told it is up to each individual teacher whether to show it or not. She didn’t know which teacher is showing it and said I could send in a note saying I won’t want my children watching. For clarification, I asked if this was a school-wide event and was told no, it is not.  I get the impression that this is a pain in the butt Dear Leader is imposing on our schools, especially on the first day which is hectic enough as it is.

Scary. People should really start paying attention to the things going on around us. History tends to repeat itself. We are already well on our way to a totalitarian/dictator state, and this has nothing to do with Obama, but corrupt politicians in general. I say we vote everyone out of the House in 2010 (http://goooh.com/home.aspx) then on to the Senate and Executive Branch. It’s about time the people took back the government.

Thanks for the info. I’m going to call my school. I don’t want my kids being indoctrinate. First it’s Obama saying “stay in school.” Sounds harmless. But what comes next? Spy on your parents? Report them for using the wrong lightbulb?

Couldn’t agree with you more. Why isn’t any of the media talking about this? Propagandizing our children right in front of our faces!!!! I want to see his speech BEFORE he delivers it to the children. This is oppression at its highest!!!! Without the intent to suggest this to anyone else…..I would keep my children at home that day.
Sorry, I mistakenly left this comment on the wrong story earlier.

I would keep them home that day, but it’s the first day of school. I’m sure it’s by design on Obama’s part. I’ll have to have a good long talk with them that morning and again after school. When it comes time for discussion maybe I’ll suggest they ask their teachers what a czar is, and how come Obama has so many of them.

Of course, Obama worked with once domesticc terroist now Professor Bill Ayers who writes and spearheads movements in education aimed at indoctrinating children. Is this for the betterment of the children. Of course not. The radicals know that to control the U.S. you must control the minds of it’s future population. Why is Obama talking to the children and not the parents? Isn’t he intefering with parental rights?

Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention, because the media surely won’t.

I have placed a call to my school district asking about this. I will absolutely not have my children listen to this crap. He wants to talk about education and being more civic minded as Americans? He is embarrased of Americans, he surrounds himself with highly “questionable” people, he calls people “stupid”, he makes poor decisions, his judgement of people and situations is horrible,(I could go on and on and on), and I’m suppose to let this man talk to my children?!
I will raise my children to be proud Americans, good people, and to work hard for what they want in life. My children are NOT raised by a village, they are being raised by me.
Does Obama have a degree in child education, or pyschology? Why should I let someone who makes bad decisions, surrounds himself by criminals/haters, is destroying this country sit down and have a chat with my kids?
This is absolutely ridiculous! I don’t even let me kids watch tv unless I know what kind of show it is and I decide if it’s appropriate. Well, Obama is not appropriate to speak to my children.
Enough said, sorry I rambled. This has got to stop!

We teach our children how to succeed in school just fine, Mr. Obama. America please stand up for your principles and trust your instincts, keep your kids home that day!!

You people are all nuts! The President of the United States is taking the time to address all the children of the country to encourage them to work hard to be successful academically and to stay in school. And lo and behold, the right-wing nutjobs of this country have a problem with it. If any of you had any guts you would ‘fess up and admit that, no matter what he did, you would find some reason to complain because you are sore losers.

I will admit that I’m a sore loser.
I’m a sore loser because I don’t agree with the way he is running the country.
I’m a sore loser because he is trying to get government in every aspect of our lives.
I’m a sore loser because all of his policies seem to be pushing us towards socialism.
I’m a sore loser because I’m proud to be an American, when all he can do is apologize for us and our way of life.
I’m a sore loser because I teach my children to work hard for what they need/want and not expect handouts.
So, yes, I said it, I’m a sore loser, only it’s not just me that’s losing, it’s the whole country.

    Pauline,
This is the same message we ( I guess that would be us nuts) deliver to our children on the daily- that hard work, education, strong family bonds , and belief in themselves are what will make them sucessful.
We just believe that we, as parents, need to be the ones delivering that message. Not the government- because it does NOT take a village to raise a child- (I’ve seen the village, and I don’t want it raising my child ) It takes parents.
Also-I really find it sad that as soon as someone disagrees, or voices a different opinion, the name calling begins.

Dear DC and Lonely Conservative — I am a public school teacher. I showed President Bush’s inauguration to my students twice. I showed President Obama’s inauguration to them, too. The President is giving a speech to our youngest citizens. There’s nothing wrong with what he’s saying. His message, about staying in school and being successful, is a good one. You people, on the other hand, sound like paranoid lunatics. Oh, and why don’t I go over to Daily Kos? Because I don’t choose to leave you here to wallow in your paranoia.

Well, we certainly have reason to distrust this man who has surrounded himself with 32 unelected czars (again – unprecedented in US history) some of whom are known communists. Showing inaugurations is one thing. That’s simply history – it shows that here in the US we have a peaceful transition of power. Nothing wrong with that. But beaming a message to children straight from the White House, not knowing ahead of time what will be said, is a precedent I really don’t want here in this republic. Perhaps his message will be perfectly benign. I have no way of knowing. Perhaps you are a good teacher who can teach without bias. Unfortunately, there are quite a few who aren’t. I have video of at least one who isn’t.

I just don’t understand the insults. I have friends on both sides of issues like these, and we do get into debates, but I have to say that as professionals, we do not go to name calling. I hope that you don’t call your students names when they disagree with you.

You know… I think the problem most people have is the fact that Obama is doing this when parents are not with their children and don’t know what he’s going to say. At least that is the problem I have with it. IF it’s so important, why not do it at 7pm when children are home with their parents and their parents can answer the questions their children might have and then the next day the teachers can ask the questions. This speaking to the children during the school time (in most cases during lunch time) without a parent present is completely wrong and not the way we work here in the United States.

I will be keeping my children home (or picking them up early) in order to see what this is about. We will watch it together and discuss what he has to say as a family, as it should be done in the first place.

Question is “why?”. Why now? The kids will love him. The parents are really starting to feel the opposite. Once the kids love him it will be hard for them to stop loving him later no matter what. He can plug into the kids that love him, whenever, in the future. Obama can be very charming when first seen even with adults, (what an understatement) . Perhaps he wants to develop this love before we all catch on to him and it would be too late. Perhaps he has plans in near future and he must develop this love before his plans go forth. Remember there is something everyday that upsets us. How much time does he have left? He is going downhill fast. Sorry, I just don’t trust him.

Remember in 8 years many of these kids will be of voting age and ,also, of age to serve the “one”.

Pauline has stooped to that lowest form of argument, name calling and faux intellectualism. There are basic problems–in a Constitutional Republic– with what Obama is doing and how he is doing it, Pauline. And if you are a teacher I would expect you did have to learn just a little bit of history and might understand why his agenda, and the way he is ramming it through to the American public, is disconcerting. At least be INTELLECTUALLY honest enough to concede there is reason for concern. His speech to school children is absolutely not about encouraging them to do well in school and work hard—I can bet you real money right now that it will be filled with left leaning ideas with which I have a real and deep conflict. I oppose everything this man stands for and wants to accomplish. Why on earth would I want a kid to listen to that without an opposing viewpoint? We are sick to death of this guy, Pauline, after 7 short months. Absolutely appalled by him and the cipher that he is. Feel free to wallow in our “paranoia”, whenever you wish. Eventually you’re going to feel it, too. Oh, and Pauline? “No matter what he does I will find a reason to complain”. There, admitted it for you.

Liberty, lol and right on! We don’t lack humor, in fact we find soooo much humor in the hypocrisy of the left! And thank god there are so many more smart, common sense, logical people on our side, than mind numbed on the left.

They tear our country down, and always threaten (but never go thru on the promise) to move to Canada or Mexico when their side loses…..but then dayum, here they still are.

I have heard back from my children’s schools. Apparently they are leaving it up to the teacher to decide on weather to show it in their classrooms.
I have a daughter in Kindergarten, the teacher is undecided, but says that if she does decide to show it, my daughter will be given other activities to do outside of the room.
My son who is in the 3rd grade – his teacher has not yet responded.
My oldest daughter is a junior. The principal assured me that she will be able to go to the library during this time.
I’m still undecided if I let them go to school.
I don’t want them to miss the day, but I don’t want them to feel like they missed out. It might be easier to keep them home and let them watch cartoons.
The message from the cartoons will be better, I’m sure…

The president is simply giving a speech to encourage children
to stay in school and work hard. What could possibly be wrong
with that? Isnt that precisely what our leaders should be telling
our children? His Mom got him up early everyday to help him
with his lessons so he would be sucessful in school. Im sure
he wishes the best for all the children in this country.
He is trying to inspire kids to volunteer in their communities.
Is that wrong? What kind of message are you giving your
children by yanking them out of school? Does everyone have to
agree with you rightist thinking and if they dont you decide
you children will not be allowed to listen. Arent you then
approving of some sort of censorship.

Carol-the jig is up. 1) you would might be one of those that would not like Brush to speak to our children. Can’t have it both ways. 2) Obama’s popularity is currently in free fall. What would you expect from people that dislike him. 3) The term censorship doesn’t apply to people’s young children. People have full right to control what their children read or hear till their children have more mature minds. Didn’t Obama say “stay away from my children”. 4) If people of the left or right or whoever would stop using false arguments, we might get somewhere in this country. We might face trues and change enough to listen. We might get on the same page and solve problems rather than trying to get power. 5) Look at who Obama associates with, the many reversals he has made from election promises or the way he has condemmed our country all over the World to see why many people do not wish to see young, open minds filled with first impression love and might become future supporters to be used to “Change America”. Most people love what America is about, but are willing to make changes that will improve the country. They, however, must be included and not have things shoved down their throats. Isn’t that what Obama was trying to do in July by giving the Congress 2 weeks to approve the biggest change in America since the creation of the Constitution, while taking 6 months to select a family dog. Was this respect for the people? Was this respect for Democracy? This showed(proved) that he know what was good for us and he was going to take the power to shove it down our throats. We were not smart enough to known what’s good for us. To be honest many of our political class think this way, but Obama is an extreme case of this problem. Obama-stay away from our children. We know you power and we know your weakness. the combo could change America into a failed state such as history has seen with no exceptions. It don’t work, but costs us all everything-including our freedom. You say “not our freedom”. Ha. The changes Obama wants could be impossible to reverse. We all know that. Mininmum, we loss that freedom, which means loss of financial control from which lots of things flow.

The real pain is that Obama knows this. So what does that tell you about Obama.

So much fighting. I find it disturbing that we as people are so quick to throw out the “right-wing nutjob” and “lefty-loony” monikers. How are we supposed to solve anything if we lower ourselves to name calling right off the bat? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I think that’s a great thing, but it doesn’t mean we cannot have reasonable, rational conversations or debates.
Personally, I don’t necessarily have a problem with the President talking to children. However, we have to be very careful. What exactly is he going to say? And what will the lesson plans for the day be in the classroom? Will there be discussions/debates on what the President has to say? Or is it as I am to believe now that the kids will spend the afternoon explainging how they can help accomplish the President’s goals? There is a big difference.

If this is so benign, I am certain that these schools don’t mind if parents come sit in for the day, eh? Offer up an opposing viewpoint during class time?

Carol, you may have missed the (glaring) point that people are not upset with a taped (or even live) message from a president encouraging hard work and personal responsibility. When you cross into suggested lesson plans instructing said children to write essays about “how they can help the president” (do what? If he’s just encouraging them to learn to read, what do they need to help him with?? What help does he plan to ask for, and addressing what??) and about “what the president is asking them to do”, he has crossed a bright line. That’s Hitlerian. I do not make that comparison lightly or flippantly, either–spend some time studying Hitler’s tactics, motives and propaganda and you will discover that someone in Barry’s White House is certainly a fan. The technical parallells are astounding and should be loathesom to every American citizen.

We Americans have always prided ourselves on the fact that we are NOT Europe. We are NOT those failed experiments. We are the experiment everyone wants to participate in–the brightest minds in the world come here to learn. I suspect they do not come here to learn what Obama thinks they should think! Just as a priest is not allowed to beam a message to every school kid in the U.S. and ask them to write letters about “how they can help” him with “changing the country to achieve social justice”, it is UNSEEMLY AND INAPPROPRIATE for any president to do that (barring a ground war in progress–I would make that exception). The tone of the instructions to teachers coming from the White House should offend you, deeply. We do not–and never want to–live in a dictatorial form of government and that is exactly where Obama would like to take us.

George Bush did no such thing immediately after (or long after) we watched 3,000 people die in prime time. I respect the fact that he kept the very real, imminent, and grown up topic parked where it belonged—with the grownups. Using schoolchildren this way is extremely distasteful. Let me know if you’re still confused about the outrage.

I do believe the Patriot Act included a sunset – meaning it had an expiration date. And it isn’t like Bush was listening in on average phone calls. Only calls made to overseas suspected terrorists. Sounds reasonable to me, but I do agree that it did open the door for someone like Obummer. I haven’t had the chance to get to it, but the Obama admin is looking to mine data from Twitter, facebook, myspace and other social networking sites. I wonder why.

First they’ll take care of all the parents so there’ll be NOTHING IN OUR WAY to total domination !!! Black helicopters will FILL THE SKY !!! Not only that, I will be RE-ELECTED FOR ALL ETERNITY!!!! Bwa-ha-ha-hahahahah!!!! Sleep well tonight, my friends, it could be your last. HAhahahahahah!!! ……………………. BOO!!!!!

The Patriot Act did include a sunset for December 2005, however, most, not all though, of the provisions were re-enacted and given new sunset dates. Some are December 2009. But if Obama is looking to mine data from social networking sites, I doubt parts of it will just go away. As far as not spying on average citizens, I do not think it did at first. Things have changed though. The definition of a terrorist has grown exponentially. I mean, if you have a Ron Paul or Chuck Balwin or pro-life sticker, you are a suspected domestic terrorist. That information was given out by the Department of Homeland Security. More recently, it has come out that the NSA has been “over-collecting” data on American citizens. It’s crazy. We gave up liberty in the name of safety and now we are told to give up more in the name of change. The only the thing that has changed, is the rhetoric used.

I agree with Roy- the issue isn’t with the speech itself- it’s the of the lesson plan that is supposed to follow.
If anyone here is in Florida, have you heard from your local school district as to their plans?

“It’s one thing for a president to encourage all kids to work hard and stay in school – that’s a reasonable use of the bully pulpit. It’s another thing entirely, however, to have the U.S. Department of Education send detailed instructions to public schools nationwide on how to glorify the president and the presidency, and push them to drive social change.”

Then: Hilary once said “It’s our duty to question our leaders”.

Now: People with questions about legislation affecting our population are un-american – Pelosi.

People with questions about the speech that will be shown to their children are ‘paranoid’ and suspect subservice motives?
    How times change.

OK-liberals- please attack me personally, suggest I’m racist or unamerican, blame the prior administrations for this or any other issue that doesn’t go the way you believe it should, blame Palin when other excuses don’t work, threaten to take funding away if I don’t agree with you, or otherwise refuse to respond directly to the question.

The great part of this country is that both proponents and opponents of an issue have the right to free speech and to question their leaders. Blindly following President Obama is just as stupid as would have blindly following Bush or Clinton or Reagan or any prior leader. Don’t you agree?

Why is it unamerican or paranoid to question the material being presented to our children? Is that not our right?

I have seen a few remarks here indicating that Obama is simply taking the time to encourage children to work hard and stay in school. If his speech is so harmless and inspring, why not release a transcript? If his speech is so innocent, why not give parents an opportunity to review it? The circumstances of this speech are, at best, suspicious and at worst, indoctrination. A new low for Obama. He is blatantly circumventing parents in his pathetic attempt to win the hearts and minds of our children.

You people are kooks. Bush I and Bush II did this, and the message Obama will deliver is the same: stay in school and get good grades. As Freud once said, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

How dare the President speak to our children! He should just shut up and never try to spread goodwill or promote education. This is an outrage!

By the way, didn’t Reagan do the same thing? Oh, right…

“As Media Matters reports, on Nov. 14, 1988, President Reagan addressed and took questions from students from four middle schools. The event was broadcast by C-Span and fed to schools across the country. During the event, President Reagan launched into a defense of tax cuts even in the face of growing budget deficits. He pressed the case that lowering taxes actually increases government revenue, an argument that Media Matters notes is sharply disputed by economists.”

Adam, your first sentence is gold. Unfortunately, you lost me after that.
Once again, release this transcript of “goodwill”.

I want to know why the school district hasn’t sent a letter home to the parents about Tuesday’s upcoming speech?
Why is it not in the media?
Obama is giving a national televised speech to our children and no one is talking about it, why?

I’ve talked about it with my children to let them know that they will be moved to another area in school to do other activities while this is going on.

my 16 year old has decided to watch it, but will be taking a video camera, taping it for my husband and I to watch when we get home, then we will be able to discuss it together.
If the school says no video…then it’s a no go for her, and she agrees to that.

I am hoping the schools will make an announcement, but seeing as though this is Thursday, and the kids are out of school until tuesday, I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath.
    Very disappointing

The Patriot Act was a reasonable response to a clear and present danger. At the very least, Roy, don’t pretend that the motives are entirely different. For all the left’s caterwauling about these imaginary infringements George Bush was committing for 8 years, not a PEEP from them about the very real and present danger in the person of Barack Obama. They are not bothered in the least by the astounding number of violations of their rights that is happening RIGHT NOW. The argument about the Patriot Act in this context falls completely flat. We are not talking about the same thing at all. No grade school kid was asked to write an essay on how they could help President Bush ensure the success of the Patriot Act, and we would have loathed that idea if anyone had been idiot enough to launch it.

And John is much like David Letterman–not funny, just annoying.

    Adam
If President Reagan was the first, then why does the letter signed by Arne Duncan on the .gov website state that this is the very first time a President has addressed school children like this? Why don’t you go drink another glass of Koolaid?

My younger son’s school sent a note home today. They are taping the webcast to show later. I have no problem with him talking to the kids explaining the value of education, but do it on FACEBOOK which they read avidly. Plus, my kids will NOT write a letter or paper or anything. They hate writing and it is an uphill battle getting them to do basic assignments. Good luck getting them to write a letter on an optional activity.
