Republicans in both the House and the Senate have proposed amendments to health care bills requiring any bill be posted online for the public to view at least 72 hours prior to a vote. Democrats defeated the proposal before the Senate Finance Committee. The Washington Times reports:
Only one Democrat – Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas – voted for the measure, which would have delayed a vote on the final bill for about two weeks in order to allow the Congressional Budget Office to complete its analysis on the cost and implications of the legislation. Instead, the panel passed an alternative amendment that would require the committee to post the full bill online in “conceptual” rather than legal language, as well as a CBO cost estimate.
The minority party accusing the majority of rushing bills through Congress is nothing new. But Democrats have attracted special attention this year with a series of last-minute votes on bills that exceed more than 1,000 pages.
The House resolution remains in limbo.
The problem with the democrats’ plan to post “conceptual language” may sound like a great idea, but the devil is in the details. The Waxman-Markey cap and tax bill was loaded with language and provisions that never would have been included if only “conceptual language” were posted. Do you think they would have included language that the bill explicitly acknowledges that its passage would result in massive unemployment and makes provisions for select constituencies? Without the actual text of the House health care bill, HR 3200, would we know that the IRS will be given more power over our lives? Would we know illegals would be covered, unions would get a bailout, or any of the other crap that’s hidden in the legislative language? Have you heard Nancy Pelosi describe the bill?
President Obama and democrats promised transparency. It’s about time they put their legislation where their mouths are. If they can’t do that, they should stick it somewhere else.
Update: In case you missed Greta last night, here’s video of Greta talking to Steve Moore about this very subject last night. It’s so ridiculous. They don’t want us to know what’s in their bill!
