They call this a compromise? Baucus plan includes up to $3800 fine for failure to purchase health insurance

Geez, if this is their idea of compromise imagine what it will be like if the democrats get everything they want!

A top senator is calling for fines of up to $3,800 on families who fail to get medical insurance after a health care overhaul goes into effect.

The plan from Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana would make health insurance mandatory, just like auto coverage. It would provide tax credits to help cover the cost for people making up to three times the federal poverty level. That’s about $66,000 for a family of four, and $32,000 for an individual.

But those who still don’t sign up would face hefty fines, starting at $750 a year for individuals and $1,500 for families. The maximum penalty on individuals would be $950.

But that’s not all. The Baucus compromise still costs nearly a trillion bucks, and increases taxes during a recession.

Baucus would pay for a large chunk of his plan by taxing insurance companies on high-cost plans, a proposal that liberal groups and labor unions oppose.

A source close to the talks described the proposal as a broad outline for Gang of Six members to consider as they enter their final week of talks before a Sept. 15 deadline that Baucus said he will enforce. A Democratic lobbyist working on healthcare said the marker was intended to spur  GOP negotiators to strike a deal before the deadline passed.

Baucus’s proposal also does not include a public option, which liberals say is a necessity but Republicans have blasted as a government takeover of healthcare. Instead, it would set up membership-run health insurance cooperatives, according to sources close to the negotiations.

James Ostrowski warns Beware the Compromise:

As I think Ayn Rand said, in any compromise between food and poison, poison wins. Any compromise health care bill that moves towards more government control will be a victory for Obama and fully socialized medicine. This proposal will increase the demand for health care, raise prices, and increase the already crushing load of cartelized health insurance, leading to calls for fully socialized medicine in the very near future. Government creates its own demand. Let no one but John McCain be fooled by this Trojan Horse.

I do believe Olympia Snowe could be fooled by this Trojan Horse. Don’t let them pour this poison down our throats. What a mess!

Wouldn’t $3800 a year PAY for a policy? So if you can’t pay for a policy you get fined, but if you buy a policy you get taxed. What???????

Here in NY $3800 wouldn’t cover a family policy because the mandates forced the cost of coverage to skyrocket. So if you can’t afford about $13,000 a year, you’ll get fined up to $3,800. Nice, real nice.

It really is an amazing idea. Crazy amazing. I thought about the analogy made by someone else on another site about this being like the auto insurance we are required to buy. The point was made about those not needing auto insurance because they don’t have a car. Totally valid. But the argument they will return with is that everyone has life so everyone needs health insurance.

Of course what that implies is that the gov is now going to regulate life through fines.

And that is a scary proposition and one that flies in the face of the Declaration of Independence but it is in my opinion where we find ourselves today.
