This is so typical, and disgusting. Congress funnelled their pet pork projects through the defense bill.
The Washington Times reports:
Senators diverted $2.6 billion in funds in a defense spending bill to pet projects largely at the expense of accounts that pay for fuel, ammunition and training for U.S. troops, including those fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to an analysis.
Among the 778 such projects, known as earmarks, packed into the bill: $25 million for a new World War II museum at the University of New Orleans and $20 million to launch an educational institute named after the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat.
While earmarks are hardly new in Washington, “in 30 years on Capitol Hill, I never saw Congress mangle the defense budget as badly as this year,” said Winslow Wheeler, a former Senate staffer who worked on defense funding and oversight for both Republicans and Democrats. He is now a senior fellow at the Center for Defense Information, an independent research organization.
Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, called the transfer of funds from Pentagon operations and maintenance “a disgrace.” …
It is a disgrace on so many levels. With revenues to the federal government at an all time low and deficits at an all time high the last thing we need is more pork. Diverting the funds from our troops in harm’s way is even more abhorrent.

Maybe I’m too dramatic, but I honestly get disgusted when I read stories like this. There is no honor or virtue in Washington anymore.

Be dramatic, Jeremy, because it is dramatic. The amount of crap the Congress spews onto this country EVERY SINGLE DAY is moving us closer to a true revolution. I really hope we can all hang on until the elections, but this country has never been this out of control. If pushed too far, I see the first step as a “shut down” of the country. Still civil disobedience, but very dramatic.

Didn’t Nancy Pelosi say she was going to drain the swamp? What do we have now? A backed up sewer?

I was in the U.S. Army under Carter and Clinton.
This happened with both of them and in both cases the readiness levels suffered SEVERELY.
Ever wonder why Repub Presidents always have to spend big bucks on the Military? Clue: It’s not because they do it on a whim.
