Surprise, surprise! Democrats stuck by Charlie Rangel. They defeated a GOP resolution calling for Rangel to be removed from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee pending the outcome of an ethics investigation.
House Democrats quashed a Republican bid Wednesday to oust Ways and Means Chairman Charles B. Rangel as the top tax writer, despite defections by a handful of Democratic dissidents.
As expected, the House voted, 246-153, to refer to the ethics committee a GOP resolution that would have forced Rangel, D-N.Y., to step aside as chairman until after the completion of a pending ethics probe. [...]
The weakening of Democratic support for Rangel came after revelations in August that Rangel had failed to report some $500,000 or more in assets on financial disclosure forms.
The disclosures added to a list of potential problems the committee is probing.
In July 2008, Rangel responded to news reports alleging ethical shortcomings by requesting an ethics review of omissions in his financial disclosure forms.
Rangel is under scutiny for failing to pay federal taxes on income from rental property in the Dominican Republic and whether his lease of four rent-subsidized apartments in New York amounted to a gift that House rules require to be disclosed.
His use of official letterhead to solicit funds for the Charles B. Rangel School of Public Service at the City University of New York is also being reviewed.
Nice, Rangel will continue writing the tax laws that he circumvents.
Below is video of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) making a complete ass of herself defending Rangel.
“I want to tell you, there are many members who, if you go back over all of their records, over all of the years, you’re going to find that there were disclosures that were not made.”
