A lefty activist group sent out a fake press release saying the Chamber of Commerce is no longer opposed to climate change legislation. I saw the headline (before the hoax was discovered) this morning and wondered if it was a joke. Reuters didn’t.
The headline, if true, would be a news story indeed: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, according to a press release e-mailed to journalists this morning, had decided to reverse its opposition to strong climate change legislation. But that’s false. Some unknown group decided to punk the Chamber. And in the process, at least one news organization, Reuters, fell for it.

Reuters isn’t the only news organization to take the bait.
Reuters updated the story to acknowledge the hoax, but it was too late: The Washington Post and the New York Times had already posted the fake story on their Web sites.
“Reuters has an obligation to its clients to publish news and information that could move financial markets, and this story had the potential to do that,” said a Thomson Reuters spokesperson. “Once we had confirmed the release was a hoax, we immediately issued a correction, and in keeping with Reuters policy, the story was subsequently withdrawn and an advisory sent to readers.”
The Yes Men, a left-leaning activist group that often impersonates officials from organizations they oppose, took responsibility for the hoax.
Maybe Reuters should have verified this news that could “move financial markets” before releasing it to the public. Aren’t they supposed to be the professionals?

I saw this on my trading news service and my heart dropped. They never corrected it, so until I saw your post, I thought it was true. The lies from governments and company CEO’s that I read every day just make me sick. Keep up the great work, you are one of the heroes in this war.

I’m glad I found this site! As another lonely coservative in the city of Alexandria I’m feeling like I’m in the twilight zone every time I read the lastest whinings from the White House.
Hmmmm, what if George Bush had attacked MSNBC on an almost daily basis, telling people not to listen to them because they are not a real news organization. (Well, they’re not, but you get the idea…..)
I have sent my reps a survey asking what part of the stimulus bill encourages individual innovation and investment. What part of the stimulus rewards those of us who didn’t go into hock with houses, cars, or credit card accounts we couldn’t afford? Which government programs or agencies operate effectively, efficiently and economically?
Alas, neither Dems or Republicans have responded. Sigh.

Thanks, Lisa. That’s nice to hear after a tedious day. The last thing I felt like doing after the kids went to bed was this. You’re comment made me a little more enthusiastic.
Ann, thanks to you, too. Way to go with your reps – even if they ignore you. The best I ever got from mine was a form email from Schumer. And Dan Maffei put me on his email list – it’s like spam. I hope you come back:)
