There He Goes Again – Paterson and the Soda Tax

Over the past few days Governor Paterson has been talking a lot about slashing the budget and keeping taxes in check. I thought if he keeps this up maybe I’ll say something nice about the guy. Last night I even saw some smarmy little environmentalist on the local news blasting the governor for his proposed cuts to environmental groups.

That was then and this is now. I’m glad I waited, with Paterson one can never give praise too soon.

The New York Post reports that Paterson is pushing the soda tax….again.

That didn’t take long!

Less than week after calling on lawmakers to address New York’s budget crisis without raising taxes, Gov. Paterson fizzled out and suggested he would take another pop at passing a state soda tax.

“I promise I will put (the soda tax) back in my budget address and give the Legislature another chance to do it,” Paterson said during an interview on WNYC. “But you can’t keep voting down the ways to create revenues and then saying you don’t want to make cuts.”

The governor’s testy remark came after he heard an audio clip of Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn) advocating a soda tax and an hike to out-of-state tuition as ways to help close the state’s $3 billion budget gap.

Wow, I agree with the democrat who wants to hike out-of-state tuition - with the exception of conservative students who establish residency and start voting.

    Tax or shake down?

Patterson wants a cut of the profits.

    Tony Soprano would be proud.

Soda companies are good corporate citizens. They employ people in various communities and give to those communities in times of need. One of the first companies to respond to the tragedy in Haiti was Coca-Cola with a donation of $1 million dollars to the Red Cross. On the ground, Coca-Cola is getting four thousands cases of water through to Haiti each day. Keep going Coke — Please keep helping!

Governor Paterson should back off the soda. It is not the source of the obesity problem. Inferior physical and nutritional education, which of course leads to poor exercise habits and ill-advised diets, are the cause of inflated waistlines. Having a salad with a Coke is far better then a bottle of water to wash down a face full of dirty water dogs. Add walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator and you’re golden.
