Harry Reid is Buying Mary Landrieu’s Vote on Health Care Bill

What does it take to get a wavering senator to vote for health care reform?
Here’s a case study.
On page 432 of the Reid bill, there is a section increasing federal Medicaid subsidies for “certain states recovering from a major disaster.”
The section spends two pages defining which “states” would qualify, saying, among other things, that it would be states that “during the preceding 7 fiscal years” have been declared a “major disaster area.”
I am told the section applies to exactly one state: Louisiana, the home of moderate Democrat Mary Landrieu, who has been playing hard to get on the health care bill.
In other words, the bill spends two pages describing would could be written with a single world: Louisiana. (This may also help explain why the bill is long.)
Senator Harry Reid, who drafted the bill, cannot pass it without the support of Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu.
How much does it cost? According to the Congressional Budget Office: $100 million.
Well isn’t that nice. Certainly Louisiana voters won’t be disappointed at getting a bigger slice of the ‘pie’. And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Rep. Cao receive a similar concession from Democrats in the House?
The worst thing about all of this is that we’re supposed to be a nation of laws. Those in congress made a vow to uphold the Constitution of these United States. They don’t even bother crossing their fingers anymore when taking that oath. They openly scoff at anyone who asks how anything they’re doing is constitutional. I know – it’s so old fashioned to talk about the Constitution. But at what point will the lawlessness of our legislators lead us into complete chaos?

Unfortunately I am a constituent of Senator Mary Landrieu of Louisiana. I have emailed her 3 times today to express my outrage at letting them buy her vote! I have called every office she has in the state and D.C. to tell them how I feel. She KNOWS that we are against this bill, yet is going to sell us out! You have no idea how mad the people are down here: I guarantee she will not be voted back into office! What I’m now wondering, is if they offered her some “Czar” position or something?! I am angry beyond words! First Coa, now her! And Reid should be prosecuted for buying her vote! Both of them should be investigated! GOOOH!
Good for you, Deborah, for speaking your mind. I hope you’re right about her getting voted out. But, by then the damage will be done.
Unfortunately, I am also a constituent of Senator Landrieu. Let me tell you what her plan is to save face for voting in favor of the Senate Healthcare bill. Landrieu’s scheme is, she will vote for cloture, which cuts off debate on the bill and allows the bill to move forward in the Senate. It requires 60% (super majority) of the Senators to vote in favor of cloture, but she will vote against the healthcare bill on Sunday because it only requires 51% of the Senators to vote in favor of the bill for it to pass. So she will legitimately have plausible deniability in her next election when she stands up in front of her constituents and truthfully say, she voted against the healthcare bill. But, when she votes to end cloture, she is effectively voting in favor of passage of the healthcare bill. She thinks we are stupid and collectively, she is right.
By the way Deborah, I and some of my friend have been trying to get through to Landrieu and we too have been unsuccessful. Her staff person who answers the phone in her office, literally hung up on two of my friends. I too will contribute money and time to see Landrieu defeated in her next election. Let us not forget…

Good god, how did we let this happen? What in the hell was this country thinking when we put in party in with a veto proof majority? You are stuck with her for 5 more years, so don’t hold your breath waiting for her to respond, SHe has pulling up the gate to the castle and will not emerge for 5 years.
