Anyone doubt this just read some of the history leading up to the Civil war including the election of Lincoln. He sent telegrams to the states to ask for troops to defend Washington D.C. The response was basically go to hell. The standing army was so small that he had to beg to the states for help. The way our founding fathers intended it to be. Now states are nothing but subservient welfare recipients of the Federal government. Its all wrong. The Civil war was more destructive then most people realize. The Confederate states were excuses given for the Winning Northern states to take control of America's government. Remember the constitution was formed in 1789. Just 70 years later we had a civil war. Im not sure that there were still not a founding father or two still alive when the war started. So this was not ancient history to them. It was a part of their current thought process. Just like world war two which ended 65 years ago is a very real part of our lives and we still have many people alive that served in that war. If you read the history of our nation you realize that many of the states did not want to cede their power to a central government. They were essentially promised that IF it didnt work out they could LEAVE the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. When they acted on that...they were attacked and conquered. Their states plundered and their women raped and their towns razed. Do not misunderstand I am glad our nation did not dissolve but the Civil war has not stopped in this nation since the Election of Lincoln and our Federal government continues to take more and more and offer more and more threats. They are beholden only to themselves now. Ben Nelson proved this. Mary Landrieu proved this. Harry Reid Proves this and Im sure when the GOP is in power we can find Republicans who prove this.
