Senator Blanche Lincoln (Dim): We Can Force Americans to Buy Health Insurance Because the Constitution Charges Congress With the Health and Well Being of the American People – And Rep. Dan Maffei is Still a Buffoon

I’ve read the Constitution a few times, and I don’t recall finding the words “health” or “well being” in the document. Blanche Lincoln is a typical liberal: finding things in the Constitution that aren’t there.

Via Weasel Zippers, CNS News asked Senator Lincoln where Congress gets the authority to force Americans to purchase health insurance. Her answer was classic dumb lib: (Update: Video added below the jump.)

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) told CNSNews.com that Congress has the authority to force individual Americans to buy health insurance because the U.S. Constitution “charges Congress with the health and well-being of the people.”

The words “health” and “well-being” do not appear anywhere in the Constitution.

The Congressional Budget Office has determined that in the entire history of the United States the federal government has never mandated that Americans buy any good or service. Both the House and Senate health care bills, however, include provisions that require all legal residents of the U.S. to purchase health insurance, a provision whose constitutionality has been questioned by, among others, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R.-Utah), the former chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

This reminds me of an email I reiceved not too long ago from my congressman, Dan Maffei (Dim-NY). I had contacted his office begging him not to vote for the House health care bill, and many weeks later I received the following reply: [Note, comments in brackets are my translation of the original text.]

According to the Constitution, my job title is “Representative,” and I want to make sure that is my job description, as well. To do my job, I need to know the opinions of my constituents, and your input regarding legislative issues is crucial. Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act. Whether or not you agree with me, I appreciate hearing from you and welcome the opportunity to respond.

[Bleeding heart liberal talking points about how very expensive health insurance is and the (inflated) number of uninsured Americans, most of whom he doesn't represent.]

[Lies about how the health care bill would make everything honky dory thanks to Maffei and his comrades in Congress.)

After thousands of meetings, phone calls and other contacts with constituents, I decided that voting in favor of the Affordable Health Care for America Act better represented my constituents than opposing health care reform and risk losing any chance to improve the system. [Blah, blah, blah. Oh, and even though you don't like it I'll still represent your interests. Wink, wink!]

[This legislation is great, but it really sucks at the same time. I spoke to President Obama and Senator Schumer and told them to make it suck a little less. Trust me!]

[Repeats all the lies democrats tell about health care reform and how it will make our lives like a walk in the park. Doesn't mention it's central park at 3AM and a serial killer is on the loose.]

Being a member of Congress means I have to consider tough decisions and votes every day. I am humbled by the responsibility of representing you, as well as some 650,000 other people. I want you to know that I will continue to advocate for government accountability and transparency as I fight to bring jobs to Upstate New York and turn our economy around. [Please visit my website, paid for by you the taxpayer, to find out what else I'm doing to you and your children and future grandchildren.]

I tried to reply to Maffei’s email, but I received a message that it was undeliverable. Figures. I tried to ask “With all due respect, sir, since when is it the job of congress to fix anything in the health care system? Where do you find that authoritiy in the Constitution? Amendment X? If your constituents all wanted to drive Jaguars would you vote for legislation to provide all 650,000 of us with a Jaguar? Or only the poor ones?” I had some other choice words, but conveniently, Maffei never had to read them.

It’s bad enough when those who solemnly swear to uphold the Constitution trash it on a daily basis. When they use it as an excuse to completely disregard it, that’s beyond the pale.

Politicians like Blanche Lincoln and others who are sworn to defend and protect the Constitution make me sick. Where is the outrage from the American people concerning Senators and Representatives who trample our beloved Constitution? I’m at a loss for words. My own Senator Sherrod Brown is right there among people like Lincoln, who have no regard for the Constitution. I say we need to work very, very hard to spread the word about who they are and what they’re doing!

I am doing my best! I have the dark circles under my eyes to prove it. (From lack of sleep, nobody’s beaten me up yet.)
