Ben Nelson may be popular among his comrades in DC, but back home, well, not so much. At least judging by the reaction of the folks in a Nebraska pizza joint.
Politico: Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson and his wife were leaving dinner at a new pizza joint near their home in Omaha one night last week when a patron began complaining about Nelson’s decisive vote in favor of the Senate’s health care bill.
Other customers started booing. A woman yelled, “Get him the hell out of here!” And the Nelsons and their dining companions beat a hasty retreat.
“It was definitely a scene in there,” said Tom Lewis, a 41-year-old dentist and registered Republican who witnessed the incident. A second witness confirmed the incident to POLITICO.
It’s a new experience for Nelson.
He used to be a popular figure back home, a Democrat who served eight years in the governor’s office and was elected twice to the Senate by a state that’s as red as the “N” on the University of Nebraska’s football helmets.
But Nelson has seen his approval ratings tumble in the wake of his wavering over the historic health care bill, his deal-cutting with other Senate Democrats and, ultimately, his support to break a GOP filibuster and send the bill to a House-Senate conference committee. …
I know one way for Nelson to improve his approval ratings. And it has nothing to do with running ads or writing op-eds. It’s quite simple – he can vote no on ObamaCare. But it’s probably too late for Nelson. Once one loses the trust of the people one is supposed to represent, it’s difficult to get it back.

Yay, Nebraskans! Here’s a link to an interesting site http://vanishingdoctors.com/ Please pass it on

I wonder if he’ll “get it” or simply rationalize it away.
Personally I hope it was a traumatic experience. Politicos like Nelson too often live an a D.C. bubble world and are out of touch with those whom they represent. They look down their noses at us “little people” only to pay attention to the party line and those who forked over big bucks to get (re)elected.
I don’t say this out of spite or malice (well ok, a little maybe) but face it: without some kind of pain things usually do not change.

Darn, wish I’d known he was in town. I’d have booed too.
We’re not violent but we are angry at Nelson for selling out. He clearly could not care less about his constituents. He has been running CYA commercials incessantly here and I am sick of him saying he listened and voted the way Nebraskans wanted him to. The majority of our state is for reform but not the reform on the table so far.
He’s got until 2012, after that his career in Nebraska politics will be over.
