Cost of Building Materials is on the Rise

Mr. LC received a letter from a supplier stating that the price of building materials is going up across the board.

-”All manufacturers of residential roofing have announced a price increase effective this February in the 5-7% range.

-”A weakness in the US dollar will also encourage US producers to sell into foreign markets, leading to less availability in the US.”

-”We have received a price increase announcement from one of our major vinyl window manufacturers in the 4-6% range that will be effective mid-February. I expect others to follow.”

-”One of our steel manufacturers has announced a price increase with all shipments…..”

-”One of our aluminum suppliers [announced] a price increase in trim coil, gutter coil, soffit and related accessories.”

-”Fiber cement has implemented a 7% increase.”

-”The price of commercial roofing remains unsettled.”

It’s going to be hard to pass the increases along to customers.

Thanks, Obama. Keep on spending and piling on debt until the dollar is worthless.

Why, when I’ve got plans to finish the basement, does this happen? Sheesh, maybe if I don’t do it this year prices will be even higher next. I don’t know how folks are going to handle all these increases as well. With joblessness on the rise it will even further slow the economy. I read today that Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart are laying off about ten thousand folks. I’m sorry for those receiving pink slips that don’t have an Obama bumper sticker on their car. Hope and change… ah, right.

Sam’s Club is closing one of their local stores – in Cicero, NY.

For contractors this news is especially tough because money is so tight for some people, an increase of 5% to 10% will make them decide not to get the work done. So many contractors, like my husband, will have to eat the difference.
