Rasmussen: Scott Brown Narrows Gap to Nine Points in MA Special Election

Keep an eye on the special election to fill Senator Ted Kennedy’s seat. There’s no doubt that the odds are stacked against Scott Brown, the Republican, but you never know what’ll happen these days.

Rasmussen: A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state finds Coakley ahead of Brown 50% to 41%. One percent (1%) prefer some other candidate, and seven percent (7%) are undecided.

The special Senate election will be held on January 19 and special elections typically feature low turnout. That’s one reason the race appears to be a bit closer than might typically be expected for a Senate race in Massachusetts. Kennedy carried 69% of the vote when he was reelected in 2006.

Coakley, who was elected attorney general in 2006, defeated several other candidates to win her party’s nomination in a December 8 Primary. Brown, who has served in the State Senate since 2004, won the GOP Primary the same day.

The health care issue is expected to play a big role in the debate and Massachusetts voters hold modestly favorable attitudes about the proposed legislation. In the Bay State, 53% favor the plan working its way through Congress and 45% oppose it. …

Another Black Conservative is somewhat optimistic about Scott Brown’s chances.

It is pretty astounding that a Republican would be that close in a race for Ted Kennedy’s old seat. It is believed that a low turn out will help Scott close the gap further. If Massachusetts conservatives and Republicans are as fired up as they were here in New Jersey, then an upset may be in the making.

William Jacobsen also finds reason for optimism in the numbers.

This is better than I expected for Brown. Coakley has been a statewide figure for years, and has much better name recognition, SEIU and other union support, and the Massachusetts Democratic machine behind her. Obama won the state by over 20%, and Coakley should have had at least a mid-teens lead at this point.

But as I have noted, Coakley’s tactic of acting like the election already is over may be backfiring. …

Coakley dodged the press and went on a three week vacation, thinking the election was in the bag.

Help Scott Brown halt the democrats in Washington, DC and donate to his campaign today. It may be money very well spent.
