Scott Brown: ‘I am a fiscal conservative’

By

The first big headline I saw from Scott Brown’s interview with Barbara Walters is that he didn’t rule out running for president some day. I read the transcript of the interview, and two of the things Brown said jumped out at me.

Everyone really is the 41st senator. And what it means is that now there will be full and fair debate. And there will be no more closed — behind closed doors actions. And make no mistake, I am a fiscal conservative. And when it comes to issues affecting people’s pockets, and pocketbooks, and wallets, I’ll be with the Republicans if they are in fact pushing those initiatives.

Although he’s what some call socially moderate, I believe conservatives can get behind a guy who says things like this:

And on the marriage issue that you brought up, it’s settled here in Massachusetts, but I believe that states should have the ability to determine their own destiny and the government should not be interfering with individual states’ rights on issues that they deal with on a daily basis.

Since he still hasn’t been seated, it’s a bit premature to try to predict what kind of senator he’ll be. But if he sticks to the two principles he enunciated above, I have a feeling he’ll be alright.

One other thing worth noting – Walters tried to do a little “gotcha” when asking him about the support of Tea Partiers. He kind of tip toed around the question but was smart not to come out and say they played no role in his win. The media may see the Tea Party people as some sort of joke, but the politicians ignore them at their own peril.

Update 2/23/10: I guess Brown was lying when he made this declaration, seeing that he voted to waste $15 Billion on a phony jobs bill.
