Hit and Run on DC Blogger by State Dept – Updated and Bumped – Not a Hit and Run?

Conservative blogger Jim Treacher was hit while crossing the street by the Secret Service. The driver took off, leaving Treacher screaming and writhing in pain in the street.

Sometime between 7 and 7:30, not long after I got home from work, I walked to the CVS on 22nd and M to get some bread, milk, and a SmartTrip card. I was right across the street from the CVS, and I waited for the crosswalk light to tell me to go before I crossed. I had plenty of time left, according to the countdown clock. I was more than halfway there when a black SUV made an illegal left turn and hit me head-on. I absolutely had the right of way. I yelled something like, “Are you really doing this?” as it hit me before I could move. I landed on my face on the street and smashed my glasses and scraped my hand and immediately I knew something was wrong with my left knee. I lay there screaming and cursing for I don’t know how long, and a crowd of people gathered and told me to hold still. I was sprawled out right next to the yellow line as traffic went by.

He’s lucky he wasn’t hit again. He elaborated on the Secret Service angle via Twitter. (Via NRO)

My knee’s broken. I’m staying at my boss Neil’s house. I want to know why the Secret Service hit me, crossing w/ the Walk sign, & drove off.

They didn’t have lights or sirens or anything. They turned right into me, crossing legally, and left me in the street screaming in pain.

I know the Secret Service hit me because the cops said so. Oh, and so did the Secret Service. No apology, though. Yet.

To make matters worse, Treacher was issued a jay walking ticket by DC police!

Exit question: Isn’t the Secret Service required to obey traffic laws, or at the very least, um, not hit pedestrians?

Update: When I posted this I believed this was a “hit and run,” but apparently the agent who hit the blogger was the witness who asked him if he needed help. This is just weird. Poor guy, I hope Tucker Carlson offers good health benefits. Treacher either had, or is going to have surgery to reconstruct his knee. On the bright side, at least he’s able to undergo surgery right away, as opposed to living in pain for months on a waiting list.

Update 2: It wasn’t the Secret Service that hit Treacher. It was a State Department security officer. Updates on Treachers’s medical status can be found here and here.

Traffic laws apply to all people no matter the status. “Due regard” is the key phrase and must be adhered to. That applies to any Police or Emergency unit. Secret Service should be no different. There are many volunteer and professional firemen behind bars for this very thing.

“Due regard” is a phrase all police and emergency personel need to adhere to. Otherwise it will land you in jail. There are a few professional and volunteer firemen in jail for this already.
