It must be Thursday, because the media’s reporting on the number of “unexpected” jobless claims.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The number of U.S. workers filing new applications for unemployment insurance unexpectedly surged last week, while producer prices increase sharply in January, raising potential hurdles for the economic recovery.
As for producer prices rising, that’s no surprise. I told you about that last month. But to the experts, this news was also “unexpected.”
Wholesale prices shot up at double the expected pace in January, propelled higher by big increases in energy costs. The surprisingly large jump was viewed as a temporary blip and not the start of inflation problems, however.
