Editor’s note: This was written by a reader. The article linked indicates that the owners of the property contacted the US government four years ago about selling the property. Apparently, the big spending Republicans turned them down.

It’s winter and rather cold for most of us in our daily chase of the world, so to warm you up, I thought I’d make your blood boil. Two weeks ago on an almost party line vote, Democrats in congress passed an expenditure of 50,000,000 dollars (yes, fifty million) to purchase almost 3000 acres of property on the island of St. Croix as a National Park.
I’m sure that the elected officials that voted for this thought about in advance how many Americans could take advantage of this new gem. We certainly can’t load up the kids in the van pulling the pop up and drive off to go camping on the island. I did a cursory check on Orbitz for round trip air fare costs between the center of the country being Omaha and St. Croix. A two stopper for one adult was 544.00 dollars traveling from Monday to Monday. Add in room and board, rental cars, etc. for a total cost.
Purchased to avoid development of the pristine area, I’m wondering how fast law suits from anti capitalist eco-psychos will be filed when the government wants to create a campground or visitor center.
I guess we now can afford to buy up any property that is considered “endangered” on the planet and turn it into a park that the taxpayer can’t use or use easily. I don’t know about you, but the way the economy is, we’re not vacationing or spending extra on anything. Many of us are doing our taxes this time of year, so I hope you’re all cozy and warm now.
