The Hill reports that the Tea Partiers descending on Capitol Hill tomorrow will receive a warm welcome from the Democrats. Refreshments will be served and plenty of staff will be on hand to welcome the “visitors.” They’ve also been instructed on how to sell a crap sandwich.
But lawmakers and their staff should also understand that the tea partiers are reacting merely to a “caricature of the reform bill presented by right-wing media outlets” and aren’t intimately familiar with the legislation, the memo says.
“[D]on’t assume common myths about this bill have been debunked,” lawmakers are told. “Be prepared to explain that there are no death panels, that Medicare is in fact strengthened, and that reform is not a government take-over, but it is an attempt to crack down on the abusive practices of health insurance companies by providing oversight and increasing competition.”
No word on whether the staffers are allowed to refer to the people as an angry tea bagging AstroTurfing mob.
As for being “intimately” involved with the legislation, which legislation would that be? The legislation they’re still working on behind closed doors? The legislation that hasn’t been scored by the CBO? The legislation that contains comparative effectiveness research and a takeover of the student loan industry? The legislation that will expand Medicaid and bankrupt the states? If that weren’t the case, why the need for the Cornhusker Kickback, the Louisiana Purchase or the Gator Aid?
