Nearly Half of Americans Pay No Federal Income Tax

The headline at Drudge said it all: Rob Thy Neighbor. Not only do nearly half of all US households pay no federal income taxes, many Americans are turning a profit just by filling out their tax forms.

AP: The result is a tax system that exempts almost half the country from paying for programs that benefit everyone, including national defense, public safety, infrastructure and education. It is a system in which the top 10 percent of earners — households making an average of $366,400 in 2006 — paid about 73 percent of the income taxes collected by the federal government.

The bottom 40 percent, on average, make a profit from the federal income tax, meaning they get more money in tax credits than they would otherwise owe in taxes. For those people, the government sends them a payment.

“We have 50 percent of people who are getting something for nothing,” said Curtis Dubay, senior tax policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation.

So, the top 10% are paying more than 75% of all income taxes, but according to the Democrats and other lefties they aren’t paying enough.

Well, if Paul Volcker gets his way a value added tax will make sure everyone starts paying their “fair share” and then some.

Um, you left out this quote from the article: “The vast majority of people who escape federal income taxes still pay other taxes, including federal payroll taxes that fund Social Security and Medicare, and excise taxes on gasoline, aviation, alcohol and cigarettes. Many also pay state or local taxes on sales, income and property.”

    Why?

I’ve never made enough money to pay federal income taxes. But I’m sick and tired of paying for the parasitic class of senior citizens, for their Social Security and Medicare. Let them rot. And my neighbors can go to hell.

      Hey Mr. neighborino
I’m no fan of tax myself — but you should consider moving to Afghanistan or Iraq — somwhere with no goverment in place where you can live by yourself and fend for yourself my friend

Why is that the answer everytime someone questions our government “Why don’t you live in some 3rd world country”.

The policies in this country are shameful. Capitalism used to promote progress and the pursuit of knowledge and striving for a better life. Now we’re promoting this notion of “stay home and the government will take care of you”. I am not against paying taxes and helping those who need it, but I am against government wasting money and giving those in need no reason to try. Recently there was this commercial that stated for people to call their representative and “tell those who make over $250K per year to pay their fair share”. That is bullplop. We live in a progressive tax system and these tax breaks the liberals complain about are nothing compared to what those who actually pay taxes have as a burden.

Earlier I read a letter to the editor of my local paper. The write said “It’s time for the wealthy to start paying their fair share.” I really wanted to throw up. With half of Americans paying no share, how much more share do these idiots think is going to be left. And the recipients keep demanding more and more. They think they “deserve” it.

Two points: 1 the massive amount of taxes avoided by the rich and corporations, and 2 the fact that 80% of Americans make $75K or less. Welcome to your nation, one where some people eat gold leaf on burgers and others dig through the trash to feed their children.
