This guy’s really starting to make me nervous. I’m all for the rest of the world giving up their nukes if that’s their desire, but with Iran and North Korea out there, statements like this are dangerous, even if issued with a qualifier.
New York Times: President Obama said Monday that he was revamping American nuclear strategy to substantially narrow the conditions under which the United States would use nuclear weapons, even in self defense.
But the president said in an interview that he was carving out an exception for “outliers like Iran and North Korea” that have violated or renounced the main treaty to halt nuclear proliferation.
Will he “carve out an exception” for Russia and Venezuela as well? Does he really believe this strategy will bring the world’s thugs to heel? Or will they just be emboldened? This is scary.
Update: Russia announced that they reserve the right to opt out of the nuclear treaty with the US. What a shock.

I wonder if Obama plays poker with his back to the table. Perhaps he has some inner need to think of Martyrdom as a virtue. Anyway you cut it; it won’t improve America’s Karma. This is a reckless and irresponsible policy statement that not only endangers us but our allies.

You say: “I’m all for the rest of the world giving up their nukes…” – so its alright for the rest of the world to give its nuclear weapons up, whilst the US keeps its own? What about American ‘rougue’s’ getting hold of the US nuclear arsenal – rabid lunatics like Sarah Palin! Now that is truly scary!

What’s the opposite of Reagan’s “peace through strength”? President Obama seems to have it down pat.
It becomes clearer and clearer why, on January 20th, President Barack Obama had such trouble with the oath of office. “Preserve. Protect. And defend the Constitution.” The words got him somewhat tongue tied. Unfortunately, for this nation, other words seem to come easier.
New rules of nuclear engagement, for example. Can you say, “sitting duck”?
Let’s face it, the absence of a belief in phrases like “peace through strength” takes us down a road we don’t want to go. Without a nuclear deterrent, boys and girls, we, frankly, are in deep do do. President Obama also wants to call a halt to the development of new high tech weapons systems. I guess fairness dictates we give other countries, as well as other country’s terrorists, time to catch up to the U.S. How long before our state of the art weapons systems move to the state of antiquity? Three years? Four? Do you get the feeling this group of Neo Coms govern like they want the other side to win? I do. Moreover, I get the feeling that words like, “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” mean diddly squat to the blame-America-first gang leading America during this country’s most dangerous of times. Leading us, to say the least, down a very dangerous path.
If Obama’s decision to change the rules of nuclear engagement doesn’t light a fire under you, America, then you must be wearing asbestos drawers. It makes me want to change this administration. Preserve. Protect. And defend. It’s really not that hard to say. When you really mean it, the words just kind of roll off the tongue.
